Offa Poly Student Commits Suicide Over Handout Proceeds
Punch correspondent gathered that a National Diploma 1 student of the Civil Engineering Department, Ridwan Ajiboye, reportedly drank some quantity of insecticide and eventually died.
Ajiboye, who was the son of a traditional title holder in Iragbiji in the Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State, decided to end his life after he was allegedly embarrassed by one of his lecturers, who gave him some handouts to sell to his course mates.
The Public Relations Officer, Students Union Government of the polytechnic, Olayinka Owolabi, when contacted by our correspondent on the telephone on Saturday, confirmed the incident but said nobody knew why the deceased killed himself.
He said, “Some of his neighbours heard his cry and rushed to his room where they met him gasping for air. He was taken to hospital but he eventually died.
“They said he took poisonous substance but we do not know what he took and nobody can say why he took the substance.”
He said the remains of the student had since been buried at his hometown, stating that his parents said they were not interested in investigating the circumstances that surrounded his death.
Some days after Ajiboye’s death, another ND student of the Estate Management Department, Maryam Fasasi, reportedly attempted suicide.
Fasasi was also said to have drunk a popular insecticide, sniper, but she was rescued and revived at a hospital.
She was said to have been taken to hospital where she was treated and was discharged on Saturday.
A student of the school told our correspondent that Maryam misplaced N45,000 which was the proceeds from handouts given to her to sell by one of her lecturers and she attempted to kill herself because of this.
The Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, Mr Olayinka Iroye, said he was aware of Ajiboye’s case, saying the management of the polytechnic took him to some hospitals “but he eventually died.”
He said nobody knew why he decided to take his life while stating that the deceased was a brilliant student as shown by his academic records.
He, however, said the management was not aware of the case of attempted suicide.

EFCC Raises Team To Quiz Amosun, Okorocha, Yari As Immunity Ends
At least 12 states will have new governors on May 29 after the tenure of the current ones would have ended.
The states that will have new chief executives include Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Imo, Kwara, Nasarawa, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Zamfara.
Of the 12 states, however, four governors have been accused of corruption.
They include Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State; Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed; the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari; and Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.
Okorocha, who has been suspended by the All Progressives Congress, has been accused of diverting over N1bn meant for the campaign of his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, who contested on the platform of the Action Alliance.

A paedophile bus driver r-ped children over decades by luring them with games.
Shaun Borrett, 42, targeted children as young as five in s-x crimes that spanned 24 years.
Some of his young victims were punched and kicked in the genitals during the horrific attacks, while others were shown pornography and made to take part in s-x acts with other children.
Four children were r-ped by Borrett, who spent cash on games and consoles to attract victims and sweets and treats to induce them to stay, reports the Daily Record.
A judge told him: "You used alcohol and cigarettes as inducements and to dull the senses of the children you were abusing."
Lord Beckett said: "I consider it to be significant that your serious sexual offending against young children began when you were a young man and endured into middle age."
The judge told him he was "highly manipulative" of victims and had exploited children who were vulnerable in many ways and inflicted lasting damage.
Woman 'Stabs Boyfriend To Death After Row Over Facebook Messages'
Lindsey Ann Gabriel, 31, believed James Field was having affairs or having contact with other women, it was said.
She checked Mr Field's Facebook page and saw a number of ladies had accepted friend requests from him.
Gabriel then smashed up his vehicle and wrote in paint "cheat, waster, liar player" and wrapped the car in wrapping paper", Truro Crown Court heard.
Prosecutors claim Gabriel then stabbed him with a large kitchen knife.
James was found by passers-by lying collapsed on the pavement outside Gabriel's house in Bugle, near St Austell, on September 28, 2018.
The labourer, of Truro, had suffered a single stab wound that penetrated his ribs and into his heart and died later that night.
Prosecutor Jo Martin QC said student Gabriel she must have stabbed him with the intention to kill or at least do very serious harm.
Miss Martin said: "Lindsey Gabriel and James Field were in an on/off relationship for a few months but didn't live together.
"Not long before he died James Field bought a car, a Vauxhall Astra, and he and Lindsey Gabriel were doing it up.
"The car was kept on the drive of Lindsey Gabriel and James Field didn't have a driving license or wasn't insured.
"This caused some friction and the car plays a leading role in what happened."
Miss Martin described the relationship as "tempestuous".
The trial continues.
She says he stabbed himself and denies murder.

Man Kills Himself After Discovering Wife's Affair With Best Friend [He's Pictured]
Zoltan Benedek was found at his home dead less than three months after moving to Hull from his native Romania.
Hull Coroner's Court heard the 30-year-old's wife had followed him to the city weeks later at the chance of a better life together, reports Hull Live .
But as soon as they arrived in Britain, she claims Mr Benedek stopped showing her affection and would "not hug or kiss her".
She then struck up an intimate relationship with Mr Benedek’s best friend because he listened to her and attended to her needs, the hearing was told.
His wife told the inquest via an interpreter on Friday: "I told him about the affair and he suggested we go back to Romania. There was a big argument between us because of that. He seemed very annoyed."
She added: "He then told me to p*** off and never wanted to see me again."
The hearing was told his wife disclosed to him two weeks before his death that she was romantically involved with his best friend after “feeling guilty” about her affair.
Her carpenter husband began behaving erratically after hearing the revelations - despite her saying that she wanted to still be with him.
Mr Benedek had called the factory where the pair worked in Hull and told bosses that his partner would not be in because she was going back to Romania.
The pair had a blazing row on the evening before Mr Benedek took his own life at the Ryde Street flat which they shared together.
His wife told the hearing: "I left to stay with my husband's friend that night, when I went back at around 2pm, the door was locked and I couldn't get in.
"I saw a silhouette of Zoltan at the window and then left. When I returned back at the house at 9am the next morning, I saw my key outside the door and when I let myself in, he was dead on the stairs."
She also said that Mr Benedek drank at least three beers a day by himself, but it would quadruple if he was drinking with friends.
In their native homeland of Romania, the couple married in 2015 after meeting in a nightclub when they were aged 21.
Zoltan was brought up by his paternal grandparents and had no physical or mental health problems throughout his short life, the hearing was told.
When the pair moved to Hull in the Spring of last year they both got jobs at the same factory in the city.
Postmortem analysis found that Mr Benedek was almost three times the drink-drive limit. He had 233 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80 microgrammes in 100ml of blood.
Ian Richardson said the medical cause of death was hanging.

Sodomy: Reverend Arrested In Lagos For Infecting 16-Year-Old Boy With HIV
The reverend, who is the founder of Jesus Intervention Household Ministry located in the Ejigbo area of the state, was reportedly a member of a syndicate perpetrating the alleged crime in the neighbourhood.
It was learnt that a good Samaritan had reported a case of defilement at the Ejigbo Police Station on January 22, 2019 consequent upon which one Prince Chinecherem was arrested and charged to court.
Chizemdere reportedly went into hiding having got wind of Chinecherem’s arrest.
Luck, however, ran out on him on March 21, 2019, when he sneaked into his house in the midnight and was arrested by policemen who had been on surveillance within the vicinity.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Friday, said investigation by the command revealed that Chizemdere had molested 15 boys.
Elkana stated that the reverend lives with HIV and infected one of his victims, 16-year-old Shedrack, with the virus.
He said, “On 22 January 2019, a case of defilement of a minor (name withheld) by penetration was reported by a good Samaritan at the Ejigbo Police Station. Subsequent upon which one Prince Chinecherem was arrested and charged to court. Investigation carried out revealed that one Reverend Prince Ezuma Chizemdere, the founder of Jesus Intervention Household Ministry was part of the syndicate defiling teenagers in the community.
“He had been at large for about three months. On March 21, 2019, around 1am, police laid siege to the reverend’s residence based on the strength of information gathered that he often sneaked into the house through the back entrance. Having discovered that police had cordoned off his house, he hid himself in the ceiling for two hours. He was however arrested.
“Investigation revealed that he brought in about 15 boys into his apartment where he forcefully penetrated them all through the anus. Some members of the neighbourhood revealed that the reverend usually washed six-bed sheets daily whenever he brought in little children suspected to be his sex partners.
“On further interrogation, he revealed that he is HIV positive and has been receiving treatment for over three years. One 16-year-old Shedrack was part of his victims and was infected with HIV around October 2018.”
The PPRO said the suspect confessed that he paid his victims N2,000 each, anytime he had carnal knowledge of them, adding that he would be charged to court soon.
Oral Sex: Police Arrest Lagos School Teacher
Mary, an Abia State indigene who resides in the Makoko area of Lagos, had narrated to Punch how she was first forced to give her teacher oral s-x at the age of 16 when she was in Senior Secondary School 1.
The victim, now in SSS 2, explained that on two different occasions, she succumbed to pressure and gave the teacher oral s-x.
She alleged that the teacher further demanded s-x if she ever wanted to graduate from the school with her classmates, but she refused.
Speaking with Punch on Friday, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the teacher had been arrested. Elkana identified the suspect as one Akintunde Ajayi, 39.
He said, “The teacher’s name is Akintunde Ajayi and he is 39. I must commend The PUNCH for the detailed report because the information provided therein has helped us.
“We moved into action when we read it. We have the said teacher in custody and we are making efforts to find out whether there are other victims in the school apart from the girl that raised the alarm.”
Elkana added that the police was working with other stakeholders to conduct in-depth investigations into the matter.
Meanwhile, a non-governmental organisation which campaigns against sexual abuse and violence on women, Jewels Hive Initiative, has called on the Lagos State Ministry of Education, the police and other authorities to ensure that justice prevailed in Mary’s situation.
JHI’s founder, Mrs Oluwatoyin Falaiye, said the organisation had rehabilitated the victim and would provide further assistance to her and her family.
Falaiye also demanded the Lagos State Ministry of Education to re-enroll the victim in another school in the state for her to be healed of her trauma.

Man Sentenced To 12 Years In Prison For Kidnapping Women In Ekiti State
Justice Cornelius Akintayo sentenced the convict after the court had listened to the arguments and submission of both prosecution and defence counsel.
The court, however, dismissed the convict of murder and armed robbery.
Ogunrinde is charged with 11 counts of conspiracy, murder, kidnapping and armed robbery.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred between May 3, 2015, and May 15, 2015, at Epere Ekiti, Ido Ekiti, Ipere Ekiti, Ado Ekiti, Eyio Ekiti etc.
The victims who testified in court alleged that they were kidnapped on Ido-Ilogbo Ekiti road and taken to an unknown place.
To prove his case, the Prosecutor, Mr Idowu Adelusi called five witnesses while the defence called for witnesses.
