Photos: Overweight Thai monkey checked into boot camp to get treatment for obesity

An obese monkey in Bangkok, Thailand has been checked into the primate equivalent of boot camp to help him lose some weight.

The
20-year-old long-tailed macaque named “Uncle Fatty” has become quite
popular among tourists in Bang Thian district, who have been feeding him
everything from melons to milkshakes to noodles day in and day out.
After
seeing the pictures posted online, primate conservation group Monkey
Lovers, went last Thursday to check on the big eater’s health. He likes
eating and there are lots of visitors who give him food all day,”  said
the group’s Kawinoat Mongkholtechaphat, adding that the monkey might not
survive if he continues eating like that.

To avoid
this, the Tha Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant
Conservation has now transferred him him to a wildlife rescue centre,
where he will soon start a program including running sessions with other
animals and a lighter diet to hopefully cut his weight by half and
allow him to roam in more comfort again.

US and N. Korea tension could lead to conflict that wipes out "large part of humanity" – Pope Francis

Pope Francis who is currently on a visit to Egypt
has said he worries that the rising tensions between the United States
and North Korea could lead to a wide military conflict that would wipe
out a “large part of humanity.”

He called for
renewed diplomacy using third-party intermediaries and for the United
Nations to take a lead role in de-escalating tensions.

He
said,

‘the situation has heated up too much. I always appeal for a
solution through diplomatic means. It’s piecemeal but the pieces are
getting larger, and are concentrated in places which were already hot.
Today a wider war would destroy, I won’t say half of humanity, but a
large part of humanity and culture. It would be terrible. I don’t think
humanity today could bear it.Diplomacy is the best response in these
times’.

'Kemen has called me over 15 times but I'm not ready to talk to him – TBoss speaks on Kemen, AY's joke & Abati's controversial article

BBNaija’s third runner up, Tokunbo Idowu aka TBoss was a guest on Rubbing Minds this afternoon and she spoke on some of the controversies surrounding her, her fellow housemate Kemen, AY the comedian’s joke about her and Kemen and Reuben Abati’s article.

During the interview, Tboss disclosed that Kemen has tried calling her over 15 times since she returned to Nigeria but she isn’t ready to speak with him.

TBoss says although they have met a few times at functions, she isn’t ready to speak with him. She added that she felt violated by Kemen’s action.

“I considered Kemen a friend. He was my go-to guy. He was my buddy, my muscle. He encouraged me. He motivated me. So for what happened to have happened considering all the people that look up to me, it was sad. I was angry. I was humilated and I did feel violated but I don’t play the victim card. I honestly think that the decision that Big Brother took was the only decision that could have been taken. And everything that Kemen has to say about that, na him get him mouth, e fit use am talk wetin him wan talk but he knows and we know”.

Asked if she has seen him since she came out of the house, TBoss replied

“I have seen him a few times but I really don’t want to talk to him because honestly the day you (Ebuka) came into the house with Karen, I was thinking what would happen if I see Kemen because I thought there would be a party after then. I just wanted to slap him. I think I even said that but then I came out and I said you know what everyone can make mistake because I am an attractive person but then, I come out and I hear the interviews he has given, today he makes an apology and then tomorrow he comes out to say TBoss knows what happened and that if there was no N25 million involved, hopefully she would tell the truth. What truth are you talking about? You are contradicting yourself. And then you are calling me? He has called me like over 15-20 times but I don’t want to speak to him. I am not ready because if I talk, I would say the wrong things. I want to calm down”.

On AY’s joke, TBoss says

“I totally feel it was insensitive of him. It was very insensitive because like I said, I have a lot to say. Everyone who watched the show knows I am a very emotional person and I am very sensitive and this is not something that can be overlooked or joked about. I see the comments. I sneak into my Instagram and see the comments and I am like look, you are a female. This could have happened to you. This probably has happened to you. This incident was on camera. People saw it and people still chose to make light of this situation and make a joke out of it. If I consent to you touching me, that doesn’t mean I consent to you kissing me or going the extra mile. if you do that to me on international tv and someone out there feels it is content for a joke, its unfair. You do not have to have a daughter or a sister or any female that is close to you for you to know that what went down was not ok. You just made a mockery of my emotions and my pain. That was insensitive”.

On Reuben Abati’s article, TBoss said

“That was sad, that was just sad. Coming from someone of that calibre”.

TBoss maintained that if she won the N25 million, it would have finished in a week given all the things she would use it for. She said she had planned to take her mum on an all expense paid holiday, get her dad something lovely, give her five god-children good education and then if anything is left of it, she would buy herself a Chanel bag.

World Earth Day: Visionscape’s exemplary vision for the earth by Awodare Awofisayo

Hitherto , April 22nd of every year meant nothing especial to me apart from being the birthday of three members of my extended family . Last Saturday, April 22nd, 2017 took on a more significant importance with an event I chanced on.

Around 10.30am on the fateful day, I was just driving from Falomo towards Lekki via the iconic link bridge when I saw a group of people decked in green and white tshirts with ‘earth day’ and ‘visionscape’ boldly emblazoned on them congregating right inside the Alexander roundabout in Ikoyi.

They were assisting about twenty young children to carry a certain task which was not visible to me from afar. This rekindled  my curiousity. So I parked to make an enquiry. As I approached the tent, I heard a mother driving past shouting “we have kids too, can we come ?”. A lady retorted “why not!” and the woman in question parked and joined the group.

On joining the group, I was informed that it was the the celebration of the World Earth Day by Visionscape, an international leading environmental utility group providing turnkey solutions in areas of sanitation, energy and waste water treatment.  I was shocked to learn that every 22nd April is observed as as the World Earth Day since 1970! Waoh! A whopping 47 years and the day does not have the clout of other popular days in Nigeria in spite of the overwhelming significance of the earth. I also learnt that an American Senator from Wisconsin, Gayford Nelson first conceived of the World Earth Day when he was worried about the rate of industrialization and the careless attitude of people towards the environment.

Like Visionscape, the Earth Day Network is in the vanguard of the celebration in over 193 countries. I commend Visionscape for marking the Day with children who are the leaders of tomorrow. This is indeed a visionary move that would sensitize the next generation to the need to protect the environment. The auguries are alarming to say the least, our planet earth is reported to be losing over 15 billion trees every year which translates to losing about 5.6 acres of forest every minute! Neglect of the environment is causing severe problems like the depletion of the ozone layer, death of rivers due to dumping of industrial waste and global warming.

Visionscape demonstrated this by teaching the young ones how to plant trees to green the environment in line with the reforestation campaign geared to benefit communities, increase habitat for species and combat climate change . The company stressed the importance of caring and loving the earth passionately.

At the ceremony, Visionscape asked people to join in the effort to safeguard the earth by planting trees, limiting use of vehicles in order to reduce pollution and conserving petrol and switching off lights when not in use in addition to reducing carbon footprints by recycling papers and putting a stop to the use of plastic bags.

The theme of this year’s celebration ‘Environmental and Climate Literacy’ was well articulated by the Visionscape team and one can only hope that the company would sustain the scope of its advocacy for a better environment.

Pres Buhari is healthy enough to run for a second term- Rotimi Amaechi

Minister of Transport and former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi says President Buhari is healthy enough to run for a second term in office come 2019. Amaechi said this while responding to questions in a recent interview with Channels TV.

“If you look at the president since he came to the country, you will see there is a huge improvement. He’s regaining his weight.
This is a 74-year old man, he is no longer a 58 years old man. He is not 50. He is not a young man. I will advise that he should. The president is fit enough to govern and if he makes the decision to run again, if he does, I don’t think there is anything wrong in supporting him”he said
