Some Chinese coronavirus ventilators 'could kill patients' if used in UK, doctors warn

Some Chinese coronavirus ventilators ‘could kill patients’ if used in the UK, several senior British doctors have warned.

According to a letter seen by NBC News, doctors have warned about 250 ventilators that the UK bought from China.

The doctors reportedly warned that the machines were intended for use on ambulances and not in hospitals, and had several issues including a problematic oxygen supply, an unfamiliar design, and couldn’t be cleaned properly.

According to NBC News, the letter said: “We believe that if used, significant patient harm, including death, is likely.

“We look forward to the withdrawal and replacement of these ventilators with devices better able to provide intensive care ventilation for our patients."

The letter was written by several senior doctors, including an intensive care doctor at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, according to NBC News.

While it remains unclear who saw the letter, the Department of Health and Social Care confirmed to NBC News that it was aware of the concerns raised in the letter.

Thankfully, the department confirmed that none of the ventilators are currently in use in the UK.

A statement to NBS News said: "We are leading a coordinated effort to rapidly increase ventilator capacity and ensure these vital pieces of equipment are delivered to the frontline.

"Patient safety is our absolute priority and new orders are all dependent on machines passing robust regulatory tests to ensure they are up to standard."

Ventilators are used to take over the body's breathing process in coronavirus patients whose lungs are failing.

Michael Gove said the NHS now has more than 8,000 ventilators and the government aims to increase capacity.

Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Alasan Audu, for allegedly r.a.p.i.n.g his wife to death days after she denied him s.e.x for 20 days after their wedding.

The spokesman of the Command, SP Abdu Jinjiri, who confirmed the incident last Thursday said the teenage wife had another person she had in mind but her parents betrothed her to Audu she never wanted to get married to.

However, she was forced to get married to Audu and when he wanted to have s.e.x with her, she refused and Audu forcefully r.a.p..e.d her to death.

Audu may likely face a charge for murder which attracts life imprisonment if he is tried and found guilty before the Court over the alleged offence.

Jinjiri said the Police removed the corpse and took to the hospital where it was confirmed dead by a medical doctor and deposited for autopsy report.

He said the investigation revealed that the suspect, Alasan Audu, was not the one the deceased prepared to get married to but was forced to get married him.

Jinjiri said after interrogation, the suspect confessed committing the crime.

“At about 0400hrs, I went to her (the deceased) as a husband, but she turned my request down. I then used force on her to satisfy my s.e..x.u.a.l desire.”

Police spokesman said the case was still under investigation and will be taken to court for prosecution.

Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a total blockade of country’s borders following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic to stem its spread.

The Chairman of Iseyin Local Government, Mr. Mufutau Abilawon, alongside the representatives of Aseyin of Iseyin, Mr. Ismahil Odubiyi and medical members of the COVID-19 committee in the council, were at the residence of the foreigners to ascertain their travel history and medical condition.

“Members of the COVID-19 committee are here with us and they have questioned the individuals to know their health status and travel history, but we are not stopping at this, we need to have an emergency meeting with all the community chiefs (Baales) tomorrow morning to warn them to desist from harbouring foreigners till this crisis is over.

“These are agrarian communities and some of these foreigners are to assist farmers during planting season. But we have to face the reality, our lives are more valuable than any other thing, we must curtail their influx.”

Facebook to allow artists charge fans to access their live streams during this pandemic

Due to the global pandemic, many artistes’ shows have either been postponed to new dates or indefinitely. But fortunately, their inability to tour is gaining a new way for them to make money during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Facebook has announced it’s adding an option that will let creators charge viewers to watch live streams on the platform.

“To support creators and small businesses, we plan to add the ability for Pages to charge for access to events with Live videos on Facebook – anything from online performances to classes to professional conferences,” Facebook said via its Newsroom.

With this new option, artistes could stage virtual concerts with ticket prices. It may also present a way for the “Verzuz battles”, which have become extremely popular on Instagram Live, to become a money-making enterprise for the participants.

With these battles having viewership numbers upwards of 500,000 people, and artists like Tory Lanez bringing in more than 300,000 people to his “Quarantine Radio” livestreams, there is a real potential to earn a substantial revenue. Even if artists are able to convert a small percentage of those viewers to pay for their Facebook livestreams, it could result in a solid profit.

The upcoming feature is one of the multiple changes the social media platform is making in light of the global pandemic. Facebook is bringing back Live With, which allows users to livestream with another person. The company is making it possible to add a donate button to live videos too, aiding users in raising money for nonprofit organizations.

However, Facebook hasn’t announced when exactly users will be able to start charging for livestreams. It also hasn’t revealed how much of a revenue share it will be receiving once the feature is introduced.

TV anchor caught with half-n.a.k.e.d woman during live broadcast - and it's not his girlfriend

The Spanish TV host, Alfonso Merlos has been accused of cheating after a half-n.a.k.e.d woman walked into shot during one of his at-home news broadcasts – a woman who was not his girlfriend.

Merlos, 41, was presenting a report on the Estado de Alarma channel from his home when a woman, appearing to only be wearing a bra, walked through the room, in view of the camera.

Eagle-eyed viewers noted that the woman was not Merlos’s girlfriend, Big Brother star Marta López, but 27-year-old journalist Alexia Rivas.

Oh, the scandal…

As the extremely awkward on many levels moment went viral, Merlos stayed quiet for days on the cheating accusations.

However, he later broke his silence on The Ana Rose Show, apologising to López but claiming that they had broken up when Rivas was seen in his apartment.

The journalist said: ‘If you think that my attitude has not been correct or that there are things that I have not done well, I have no problem asking for forgiveness, although my goal was not to harm someone else.’

Rivas also insisted that Merlos was single when she started dating him a few weeks ago, telling Socialité: ‘I didn’t get into a relationship, he told me he was single. We have been [seeing each other] three weeks.’

Merlos can be seen to have a liked a number of Rivas’s selfies on Instagram from mid-April.

But as always with these things, the plot thickens – and it’s giving us major Ross and Rachel ‘we were on a break’ vibes.

López has argued that she had not broken up with Merlos, and that they were apart for four days after having an argument.

The viral news broadcast allegedly happened during these four days, and López called the incident ‘unpleasant’ and ‘shameful’.

Kylie Jenner wants company to drop the STORMI name saying her daughter is the famous one

Kylie Jenner is in court with a company over trademark.

Kylie filed new legal documents going after a company called Business Moves Consulting -- which filed to trademark "Stormi Couture" a month after Kylie and Travis Scott welcomed their baby, Stormi Webster, into the world.

Kylie applied for her own trademarks for Stormi -- including one for "StormiWorld" -- but got hit with a lawsuit from Business Moves because it claimed people would be confused by their similarities ... and it registered its "Stormi Couture" trademark first.

Jenner is on the counterattack now though and asking the trademark office to cancel BMC's "Stormi Couture" trademark, claiming the company was fraudulent in its application and only got the trademark to capitalize on her daughter's name.

Kylie says Stormi has "achieved fame in her own right," and points out that her "StormiWorld" birthday parties have been covered by major media outlets like Vogue. She also says Stormi's cosmetic line has already become hugely popular.

As Kylie's team states in the document, "The Stormi name is well known, and uniquely and unmistakably is associated with Stormi Webster."

Kylie also says BMC has a history of this sort of trademark behavior involving other celebrities -- including DJ Khaled. He sued the company over their "Asahd Couture" trademark back in 2018, believing they were ripping off his son's name for their benefit.

Two year-old girl rescued from uncompleted building in Abia

Officials of the gender-based violence response team of the Vicar Hope Foundation, Umuahia, have rescued a two-year-old child suspected to have been locked up for several days in an uncompleted building at the Zone 5 Agbama Housing Estate, Umuahia, Abia State.

The baby, whose name could not be ascertained as of the time of rescue, looked exhausted, dehydrated and malnourished, perhaps haven gone several days without food or water.

According to the Programme Manager, Vicar Hope Foundation, Mr Raymond Ukwa, the organisation received a call on Saturday, April 25, 2020, from landlords in the area that a child had been locked up in an uncompleted building.

Ukwa said working in line with well-established protocols on intervention, the foundation reported the incident to the Umuahia Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force, Mr Ekeinde Odion, who detailed officers to break into the building so that the child could be rescued.

Neighbours, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the child’s parents were in the habit of locking him up for days without food or water, adding that they sometime pass food through a crack in the wall of the building to him.

The Assistant Secretary, Board of Trustees of the foundation, Mr Chika Ojiegbe, said the child was examined by medical personnel and taken to a safe dwelling, while relevant authorities had commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding his abandonment in the uncompleted building.

Biden under pressure to address s.e.x.u.a.l assault allegation

US presidential hopeful Joe Biden said Wednesday he has a proud history of campaigning against s.e.x.u.a.l violence, as he faces mounting pressure to respond to an assault allegation made by a former aide.

The presumptive Democratic nominee has been accused by Tara Reade of assaulting her in 1993, when she was a 29-year-old staff assistant in the office of Biden, then a US senator from Delaware.

Biden’s campaign has denied the claims, but he himself has not responded directly to the allegations by Reade, now 56.

However he touted his record of supporting abuse victims when asked a question about military prosecutions for felonies including r.a.p.e at a virtual town hall late Wednesday.

“As you know, I wrote and championed the Violence Against Women Act, transformed how this country gets justice and support to survivors and led the ‘It’s On Us’ campaign to fight s.e.x.u.a.l assault on campuses.

As VP, I fought to provide a special victims counsel for sexual assault cases in the military,” the 77-year-old said.

US goverment analysis fingers Wuhan laboratory as most likely source of COVID-19

A Wuhan laboratory is the “most likely” source of the COVID-19 outbreak now ravaging the globe, according to a U.S. government analysis that catalogues the evidence and concludes that other explanations for the origin of the coronavirus are less credible.

The document, compiled from open sources and not a finished product, says there is no smoking gun to blame the virus on either the Wuhan Institute of Virology or the Wuhan branch of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, both located in the city where the first outbreaks were reported.

But “there is circumstantial evidence to suggest such may be the case,” the paper says.

“All other possible places of the virus’ origin have been proven to be highly unlikely,” the document concludes. A copy of the report, compiled this month, was obtained by The Washington Times.

Chinese authorities have said the origin of the virus is unknown but initially stated that it came from animals at a “wet market” in Wuhan where exotic meat is butchered and sold. They said the virus may have jumped from bats to animals sold at the market last year and then infected humans.

U.S. officials have grown increasingly sceptical of that version of events. President Trump confirmed this month that “a lot of people” are investigating the origin. Army Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said U.S. intelligence agencies are investigating whether the virus escaped from a lab or was the result of a naturally occurring outbreak.

“At this point, it’s inconclusive, although the weight of evidence seems to indicate natural,” the general said on April 14, “but we don’t know for certain.”

The government analysis says the animal host explanation doesn’t hold up well because the first human diagnosis of COVID-19 was for a person who had no connection to the wet market. According to reports from China, no bats were sold at the market.

Meanwhile, a number of suspicious actions and a paper trail suggest that the virus escaped from one of the labs, though China is clamping down on the ability to pursue those leads.

South African anti-apartheid veteran, Denis Goldberg is dead

Denis Goldberg, a veteran anti-apartheid activist in South Africa who was imprisoned for 22 years, has died at the age of 87.

“His was a life well-lived in the struggle for freedom in SA. We will miss him,” the BusinessLIVE news portal quoted Goldberg’s family as saying in a statement today.

Goldberg, who was born in Cape town in 1933 and passed away late Wednesday, had been active in the struggle against apartheid in the country.

In 1963, he was arrested at the Rivonia headquarters of uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), which was the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC) co-founded by the iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela.

The MK was founded following the Sharpeville massacre committed by police forces against protesters demonstrating against apartheid legislation known as "pass laws" in 1960.

Goldberg was sentenced in 1964 to four terms of life imprisonment. He was the only white member of MK who was arrested and sentenced in a trial known as the Rivonia Trial.

He spent over 22 years in jail along with other prominent members of the anti-apartheid movement in the country.

Goldberg was awarded the Order of Luthuli in Silver by the South African presidency in 2009.

Cover toilet before flushing to control coronavirus, microbiologist tells Kenyans

The threat of the coronavirus pandemic requires improved habits of hygiene and adoption of other essential habits such as covering the toilet before flushing, which unfortunately is not a common habit among locals, who have never understood the function of the toilet cover.

A microbiologist, Dr. Meshack Obonyo, said the habit of flushing toilets before covering it was risky at this time because of aerosols — those tiny droplets– of water that are sprayed out into the air would easily spread the virus if the user has acquired it.

“The habit of covering a toilet before flushing it may seem trivial but once you realize that only 15,000 people out of 47 million have been tested, it should jolt you to the fact that the known cases are far below the known,” Dr. Obonyo.

He said toileting habits are taught at the ages of two to three, however, since most parents grew up without flushing toilets, they hardly impress on their children just how important it is to cover toilet seats before flushing.

Apart from preventing the aerosols from spraying into the air, he said covering before flushing also limits the faeces and urine smell from spreading all over.

However, he said those who share public or Indian type of toilets could also prevent the spread of the disease, in case they are sick, by sprinkling some detergent before flushing.

He added that regular cleaning of points of contact such as handles, seats and knobs for flushing was extremely important and at all times the entire area should be dry, and any leakages should be repaired without delay.

Dr. Obonyo urged the county governments to up their game by fixing any sewerage leakages and overflows immediately and supply adequate clean water constantly.

We aren’t in a hurry to reopen airports – Federal Government

The Federal Government says it is not in a hurry to re-open airports in the country.

Minister of Environment, Mahmood Abubakar, made this known on Wednesday during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja.

He said the sector is such a specialised one because of its high safety standards.

He said decontamination and disinfection have been completed on two out of the 125 aircraft earlier announced while the process is ongoing at the 13 airports mapped out across the country.

He said, “Decontamination and disinfection specifically as it affect the aviation sector. The aviation sector is such a specialised sector and that is why we are not rushing things.

“Last week, I did say we mapped out 125 aircraft and 13 airports. So far, we have decontaminated and disinfected two aircraft.

“Why we are not rushing it is because of the nature of their industry, it is such a place with a (high) system of safety, so every standard must be followed carefully.

“We even have to follow their lead on how to go about decontaminating and disinfecting the aircraft and the airports.

“It’s ongoing because there are other facilities that we are decontaminating at the same time all across the country, so we go as they are ready for us.”

Why I did not marry Tanasha despite being ‘1 million per cent’ sure she was the one - Diamond

Tanzanian heavy-hitter, Diamond Platnumz, has said he could not marry Kenya’s Tanasha Oketch because they differed sharply on how to raise their family.

Speaking on Tanzania’s Wasafi FM on Monday, April 27, the Jeje hit-maker said his 15-month relationship with Tanasha — which began in November 2018 and ended in February 2020 — was marred by ideological differences and lack of compromise by either party.

“My co-parent (Tanasha) has not yet opened up publicly about the exact cause of our break up, out of respect for her, I also wouldn’t go to the specific details. Nonetheless, the truth is Tanasha and I are no longer together as boyfriend and girlfriend,” said Diamond Platnumz.

“We separated because of factors beyond our control. We thought it would be wise if we gave each other the personal space to decide exactly what either of us wants. However, I would like to state that Tanasha never caught me cheating on her. Some blogs wrote that I was unfaithful, and that was the reason she and I separated. No, she never busted me cheating on her,” emphasised Diamond Platnumz.

“If there was a relationship that I wasn’t jumpy in, was my affair with Tanasha. In the past, I would admit, I was still young, jumpy and excited. But, when I got into a relationship with Tanasha, I shoved aside all the jumpiness and decided to commit to the relationship.

“We differed on how she and I wished to run the family. None of us wanted to compromise on their stand. We never met half-way. It was then that I said: ‘maybe each of us should think independently on how we’ll run our individual lives thereafter’. If God plans that Tanasha and I reunite, we will. If He hasn’t, then we won’t,” said Diamond Platnumz.

“Honestly speaking, I really wanted to marry Tanasha, a hundred per cent; one million per cent. That explained why I would even refuse to post some women on social media; some had approached me to do that, but I would refuse because I was seriously in love with Tanasha. I do not know why my dream (of settling down with Tanasha) did not materialise. Maybe, God had His plans. She had good intentions, I had good intentions,” said the award-winning crooner.

The 30-year-old artiste revealed he and Tanasha had mega life plans to the extent that the ex-NRG radio presenter converted from Christianity to Islam in preparation of their marital life ahead.

“She changed religions willingly, I did not coerce her. I remember asking her whether she was sure she really wanted to be a Muslim, and she said: ‘yes’. So, she and I went to a Kigoma mosque, where she officially shifted her religious faith,” said Diamond Platnumz. K24 Digital understands that Tanasha’s new Islamic name is Aisha.

Diamond Platnumz’s revelations — on why he and Tanasha broke up — kind of mirror what Tanasha said in a video interview posted on True Love Magazine’s YouTube page on April 1.

Tanasha said Diamond had certain expectations of how she should conduct herself in the relationship, and when she did not mould herself into that woman who Diamond had envisioned, the musician lost interest in the affair.

“At some point I was a bit lost [in the relationship],” Tanasha told True Love Magazine editor Carole Mandi in the April 1 interview.

“Now, there is a child involved. And, now, I am thinking of my son, not only me; I don’t want my son to grow up without a father. I am really trying to fight for this relationship, but I cannot be the only one fighting [for its success]. So, I had to think of what is best for me and my son. Towards the end [of the affair], things were getting rocky. Things got rocky for the past six months.

“We were still trying to see how we could make it work. And then it got to a point where I felt like the other person had lost interest. And, I would not say it was because of anything emotional. It was because he did not live up to certain expectations he had in a relationship. It is nobody’s fault; everyone is wired the way they are. And, when you do not live up to this person’s expectations, for some people, it is not easy for them to handle. Some people feel like: ‘you know what, I already have so much going on in my mind, I can’t handle this because I had this expectation’,” said Tanasha.

The 24-year-old stated she could confidently say the unmet expectations led to the failure of the relationship.

“I would say that was when things started going down, because I wanted to be my own person as well as be in this relationship. When you love yourself, you will be able to love your partner in a relationship. You will be able to love your family, your child.”

In the True Love interview, Tanasha also opened up on rumours suggesting she did not get along with Diamond’s mum, Sanura Kassim, hence the reason her relationship with the multi-award-winning artiste failed.

“I would say respect the mothers of your spouses. But also, it can get to a point where they will try to get a little controlling, and that is where you set your boundaries. And, you say: ‘no, I am the wrong person to control, darling’. It all comes down to: ‘what is best for you?’

“Don’t disrespect anyone’s mother. However, set boundaries. When you feel like it has become too much now, tell them. And set the boundaries in a respectful way from the beginning. And, if you feel that it is not working, and you are trying everything you can, and there is no progress; that is the time to look deep within yourself, and make a decision and say, ‘Am I going to take all these BS, or am I going to leave’?” said Tanasha.

The mother-of-one suggested despite there being friction between her and Sanura, Diamond failed to defend her (Tanasha).

“He should also take responsibility, and say: ‘This is my woman, and you are not going to make her feel uncomfortable’,” said Tanasha.

And now, Diamond Platnumz says he “fails to understand” why people are quick to blame his mother for all the break-ups he has had with his ex-lovers, who are more than seven.

“It hurts me when people blame my mother for my break-ups. I don’t live with my mother currently, and she works very hard to eke a living. I do not understand why they often blame my mother for my separations,” Diamond Platnumz told Wasafi FM.

Neither of the ex-pair said he or she is currently in a new relationship, and none plans to get in any affair soon.

“Currently, I am not in a relationship. Honestly speaking, I do not want to be in any other relationship as of now; I want to concentrate on my career. However, one thing I am sure about, is that my next relationship will end in marriage,” Diamond Platnumz told the Wasafi radio outlet on April 27.

Tanasha, on the other hand, told Carole Mandi in early April that she will take a break from romantic relationships for at least two years from the date she broke up with Diamond.

On co-parenting plans with Diamond, the 24-year-old said: “That is something I would like to keep private for now because it is something in the works.”

German, French doctors pose n.u.d.e to protest lack of personal protective equipment [photos]

Healthcare workers in Germany and France are baring it all to raise awareness about shortages of personal protective equipment as they battle the coronavirus.

A German website called “Blanke Bedenken” shows medics posing in the buff using medical equipment, including stethoscopes and anatomical skeletons, as props to partially obscure themselves.

“We are your [doctors]. To be able to treat you safely, we need protective gear. When we run out of the little we have, we look like this,” the organizers said in an English statement on the website, whose name translates to “Naked Qualms,” according to The Guardian.

“We are all vulnerable. Medical practices need more support from politics,” the group added.

In France, dentists launched a similar project, artfully posing n3ked with the hashtag #dentisteapoil  or n3ked dentist to alert the government about their work conditions in light of the partial lifting of lockdowns.

Dentists were forced to stop working and give up masks and other protective equipment amid the pandemic and many are worried about a PPE shortage when they go back to their jobs starting May 11.

“Give us the ability to protect ourselves and to treat our patients safely when we go back to work May 11,” one person wrote on Instagram, along with a photo showing two naked women in what appears to be a dentist’s office.

The French health ministry has promised to provide just 150,000 masks for the 42,000 dentists in France.

A spokesman for Germany’s Federal Ministry of Health said about 133 million protective masks had been distributed amid the crisis. The country received a shipment of 10 million face masks from China, and expects to get 15 million more.

One of those in attendance posted an image to Instagram commenting: “Away for a social distance swally way ma bestos probs be in the cells for 4”.

She also posted a photo of the group with the comment: “Rip James” .

One lad planning to attend goaded authorities when he posted “f**k yer social distancing” before later making his account private.

A member of the public, who fears that the group could have put themselves and others at risk, said: “Some of these individuals have lost friends and family to the virus and others are single mothers.

“One remarked ‘f**k yer social distancing’.”

Announcing the funeral plans for James, his family had requested people wishing to pay their respects should observe social distancing measures during a farewell procession on Friday ahead of Saturday’s ceremony.

Social distancing has seen many families unable to properly say their goodbyes to loved ones at funerals.
