Over 120 Schools Storm Rowe Park As Opeifa Handball Cup Kick Off

The 3rd edition of the Lagos State Secondary Schools Handball Competition tagged 'Opeifa Cup' began this morning at the popular Rowe Park centre in Yaba, Lagos. The competition was introduced in May 2015 in a bid to use the sport to celebrate the birthday of Mr Kayode Opeifa who was the Commissioner for Transportation Lagos State at that time.

Students from various Secondary Schools from the corners of Lagos gathered with excitement to do battle against each other.

According to the technical director of the competition, the tournament will be played in a knockout form from the beginning to the end. The competition is been officiated by registered referees from the state and national while retired legendary handball coaches like Coach Lucas and Danjuma are also rendering their experiences to ensure that the tourney succeeds.


The competition is in two categories, male(senior & junior) and female(senior & junior). The junior and senior categories will run simultenously. The competition will hold it's grandfinale on the 19th of May, 2017.

The participants will be given with certificate of participation, exercise books, balls, school bags. The outstanding schools will go home with trophies while outstanding players will win MVP awards. Medals will also be issued to players and officials between the 1st-3rd positions from all categories. Players will also be selected for further development at the state level.

Some noticeable schools that featured today include Wesley Junior High School, Itolo Senior Grammar School, Herbert Macaulay Junior School, Jagunmolu Girls School, Mainland Senior School and a host of others.
