It’s barely been opened for 48 hours but someone has already vandalised the UK’s first David Bowie statue.

The memorial, which was unveiled on Sunday afternoon, has been covered with black graffiti that says ‘feed the homeless first’ and ‘RIP DB’.

It was put up at Aylesbury’s Market Square, Buckinghamshire, where Bowie made his debut as Ziggy Stardust.

The statue, paying tribute to the artist who died in January 2016, was paid for as a result of a fundraising campaign set up by promoter David Stopps.

The final bill was more than £100,000 and was helped along with a number of grants.

However, soon after the public unveiling it was covered in the black spray paint as can be seen in these photos.

Deputy Mayor Mark Willis, who was at the unveiling, said: ‘I want to point out that this statue received precisely £0 of public money.

‘That’s right, £0. It was entirely funded through crowdfunding, by members of the public, myself included.

‘One of the charities I support monthly is Shelter as homelessness and poverty are absolute scourges on society that need solving.’
