A newborn baby was burned by a cigarette end that was tossed into her pram by a careless smoker, the infant's parents say.

Sophia Harnaman skin was left severely blistered after the used fag landed on her as she was being pushed by her mum Amy.

The cigarette "burned right through" the five-week-old girl's blanket, snowsuit and top by the time distraught Amy realised it was there.

It landed in the pram as they hurriedly walked past a group of smokers at a bus stop in Edinburgh.

Nursery worker Amy, 22, had just collected her eldest daughter from Clovenstone Primary School and was walking home with her sister Chloe Martin.

Chloe, who also had her three-month-old son Cayden in tow, said the family are disgusted by what happened to little Sophia on Wednesday afternoon.

She said: "We were walking with all the children in Clovenstone Road when we could smell smoke.

"A bus stop was ahead and we noticed that there were people smoking in the shelter.

"We walked past it quickly and soon after my sister noticed something in Sophia's pram.

"She soon realised it was a fag end, someone had flung it away carelessly and it landed on Sophia's blanket.

"It had burned right through and we started to panic."

Frantic, the pair undressed the baby to find the lit cigarette had burned right through Sophia's fluffy blanket, snowsuit and top.

By the time the sisters rushed home they realised her skin had started to blister.

Chloe said: "My husband rushed us all to the doctors.

"Amy was in a state of shock, it was awful.

"Big sister Eilidh was really scared too about what was going to happen to her sister.

"Even though Sophia didn't realise what was going on she was clearly distressed, she was screaming and crying the entire time."

Doctors told the Harnamans to take Sophie straight to the sick kids hospital in Edinburgh.

Chloe said: "Once we were in A&E the blisters were bad.

"Doctors had to burst them then put a dressing on.

"We were all so shaken up and still are.

"That bus shelter has loads of children passing it everyday.

"Eilidh is in primary two and is now scared to walk by it again, she doesn't even want to go to school. It's terrible."

The family are now sending a warning to parents about "thoughtless" smokers who don't take care when putting a cigarette out.
