Based on marks on his elbows and back, it is believed that he had desperately tried to escape from the drum.
Detectives are trying to establish whether he was forced into the machine by an intruder or climbed in voluntarily.
The child - who has not been named - was home alone after coming back from school in Yelizovo, Kamchatka region, according to police.
His mother got back from her job in a nursery, and her son was “missing”, she said.
Then she noticed him behind the closed door of the washing machine, said the Russian Investigative Committee.
“Her son was lying inside without showing any signs of life,” reported Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
She opened the door “and pulled the boy out” but he had “no heart beat”.
She called an ambulance but the boy was found to be dead.
Detailed forensic tests will be carried out to discover the cause of death, and investigations are continuing.
Detectives say they could find no immediate evidence of a forced entry to the family’s flat, and it is suspected the "small and slim" boy climbed in the drum.
Top investigators had been assigned to the case, said the committee.
