22-year-old boxing prospect Alexis Navidad has been shot and killed in front of his home in El Salvador's capital city San Salvador on Sunday evening.

Navidad, known as 'Payasit' (Little Clown) was shot twice in the Santa Anita neighbourhood and two alleged members of an LA street gang have reportedly been arrested for his murder.

Local publications are reporting that Navidad was sat outside his house with two other people when he was shot and was swiftly taken to hospital after suffering two gunshot wounds.

Tragically, the boxer died from his injuries shortly after he was admitted and the cause of the attack remains unclear.

Navidad's father Wilfredo broke the news, saying: "My son, Alexis Navidad, was killed in a cowardly way on Sunday afternoon.

"The people and athletes that met him know he was a nice young man. He worked and fought for his infant child and was preselected for the Salvadorian national team.

"I only ask God to give our family strength and may the punishment come from God - but there is worldly justice and may they punish those delinquents.

National Institute of Sports President Yamil Bukele paid tribute to Navidad, saying: "We want to clarify that Alexis, as confirmed by the Salvadoran Boxing Federation, had no ties to the gangs or any criminal structure.

"He was, since 14 years of age, an athlete dedicated to his passion, boxing. We know that due to the health emergency in the country, 'El Payasito' will not be able to receive the tribute he deserves, but we offer our most sincere expressions of condolence to his relatives and to the great family of Salvadoran boxing."
