US couple draw guns on protesters passing their mansion

A US couple brandishing an assault rifle and a handgun confronted protesters outside their Missouri mansion in a viral video that was retweeted by President Donald Trump, sparking divided reactions.

In the video, Mark McCloskey wears a pink polo shirt and pleated khakis, with his wife Patricia, is in a striped T-shirt and cropped pants.

Both are standing barefoot in their garden in St Louis, Missouri, on Sunday evening as protesters marched down a private street to demonstrate in front of the mayor’s house.

Mark McCloskey, 63, a lawyer like his wife, 61, told a local news channel they were “terrified” when the protesters arrived.

“A mob of at least 100 smashed through the historic wrought iron gates of Portland Place (and) rushed towards my home where my family was having dinner outside and put us in fear for our lives,” he told KMOV4, the local CBS affiliate.

“This is all private property. There are no public sidewalks or public streets,” McCloskey said.

“I was terrified that we’d be murdered within seconds, our house would be burned down, our pets would be killed. We were all alone facing an angry mob.”

Trump retweeted without comment the video of the white couple pointing a semi-automatic rifle and a handgun at the protesters, the majority of whom were black.

The clip sparked outrage online. The attorney for St Louis, Kimberly Gardner, said she was “alarmed” to see “peaceful protesters were met by guns and a violent assault.”

“We must protect the right to peacefully protest, and any attempt to chill it through intimidation or threat of deadly force will not be tolerated,” she tweeted.

Faced with a growing backlash, US congressman and Trump ally Matt Gaetz came to the McCloskeys’ defence on Twitter, depicting a dystopian future if Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden wins the November election.

“In Joe Biden’s America your job is illegal, you are locked in your home, borders don’t exist, MS-13 lives next door and the police aren’t coming when the mob arrives,” he wrote, referring to a gang founded in the US by Central American migrants.

“This is all of us,” he added, attaching a photo of the couple to his tweet.

Kidnappers kill doctor, son after collecting N7.5m

Police on Monday paraded two men suspected to have been involved in the kidnap and murder of a doctor, Audu Benedict, his son, Iranum, and a family friend after collecting N7.5 million ransom in Benue State.

The suspects, Tehile Tsavbee and Gwa Tekula Henry, were paraded alongside 25 other suspects for offences ranging from kidnapping, robbery and illegal possession of firearms, among others.

Force spokesman Frank Mba said Tsavbee and Henry were part of a kidnap gang led by one Tena, who is still at large, that have been terrorising Benue.

Mba said the victims were abducted on their way to Abuja.

The gang also kidnapped one Veronica, a sister to one of the suspects, Henry, who was later released after a ransom of N500, 000.

Mba said, “This is the kidnapping syndicate that took Dr Audu Benedict, a native of Taraba State, his son Iranun Audu and a family friend who were on their way to Abuja, ambushed them on the way and killed them somewhere around Benue State. The family of the doctor paid a ransom of N7 million to these criminals. The doctor also raised a check N500,000 which one of the suspects personally cashed out in the bank.

Tsavbee reportedly confessed that he carried out the act, but Tena, his boss, carried out the killings. He said he did not know why the victims were killed.

He said he got N300, 000 as his share.

Mba said the ringleader of the group, Jerome Matthew, was in custody, adding that six AK-47 rifles and several other weapons were recovered from the suspects.

Belgian king apologises to DR Congo for colonial-era cruelty

Belgian King Philippe has expressed regret for the acts of cruelty committed during the years that his ancestor, Leopold II, presided over what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In a letter to DRC President Felix Tshisekedi on Tuesday, Philippe wrote for the first time of his deep regret for these past injuries, the pain of which is also revived by the discriminations that are all too present in our societies.

The 60-year-old monarch also apologised for the suffering and humiliation caused after the end of Leopold II’s administration of the Congo Free State (1885-1908) when the country became Belgian Congo.

DRC marks the 60th anniversary of the declaration of independence from its former colonial power on Tuesday.

Historians estimate that the population of the Congo Free State may have halved to around 10 million people during the years Leopold II presided over the territory as his private property.

The country and its people were exploited for natural resources, including rubber.

After the violent death of African-American George Floyd in police custody in the U.S., there have also been demonstrations against racism in Belgium in recent weeks.

Protests were also directed against monuments from the colonial era, especially statues of Leopold II.

French court sentences former PM Fillion, wife to jail

A French court has sentenced former French prime minister, François Fillon and his Welsh wife, Penelope, to jail for embezzling public funds.

Francois was found guilty of creating a fake job for his wife, using taxpayer money.

The 66- year-old was accused of creating a position that paid his wife over €1 million ($1.13 million) in public funds, a charge that cost him his 2017 presidential bid. His wife, Penelope, was also found guilty of being complicit in the case.

He was additionally accused of getting the millionaire owner of a literary magazine to pay his wife €135,000 for “consulting work.”

Mr Fillon was sentenced to five years in prison, three of which were suspended, as well as a €375,000 fine. Fillon was also banned from running for elected office for 10 years.

His wife was handed a three year suspended sentence and fined the same amount.

Mrs Fillon was found guilty of having a “fake” job at a French-language monthly literary, cultural, and political affairs magazine, Revue des Deux Mondes, run by one of her husband’s friends.

The court said Mrs Fillon, 64, was paid “the maximum possible” and that the sums were “out of proportion to her activities”.

“Nothing could have justified the remuneration she received,” said Nathalie Gavarino, the leading judge.

The couple, who have five children, were additionally convicted of employing their two eldest, Marie and Charles, between 2005 and 2007, paying them a combined €117,000.

A third accused, Marc Jouland, who took over Fillon’s constituency as MP in the AssemblĂ©e Nationale while he was prime minister was given a three-year suspended sentence and fined €20,000.

François Fillon previously served as prime minister in Nicolas Sarkozy’s centre-right government between 2007 and 2012.

Baby girl is born with no arms or legs in Inda

A baby girl born without all four limbs due to a rare genetic disorder has left doctors and family members baffled in India.

A woman, who local media report is 28 years old, gave birth to the child in the Sakla village of Sironj Tehsil in the Vidisha district yesterday.

According to reports, the baby was born with an autosomal recessive congenital disorder - Tetra-Amelia - which is characterised by the absence of all four limbs.

Footage shows a woman holding the baby which is missing both its arms and legs and is wrapped in a blanket.

Dr Suresh Aggarwal, a paediatrician at Rajiv Gandhi Smriti Hospital, Sironj, said the baby is perfectly healthy.

Doctors suggest the baby will be taken in for further assessments to check if her internal organs have developed properly.

Tetra-Amelia syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by mutations in the WNT3 gene and is extremely rare.

According to Bhopal CMHO and paediatrician Dr Prabhakar Tiwari, the syndrome affects one in 100,000 newborns. He said this is the first such case of his career.

A 2011 study by Dr Eva Bermejo-Sanchez of the Research Centre on Congenital Anomalies (CIAC) at the Instituto de Salud Carlos III in Spain shows that the disorder occurs in around one out of every 71,000 pregnancies.

There have been several cases of the syndrome over the years, including RJ Wilson from Florence, South Carolina.

His mother Jasmine Self was five months pregnant when an ultrasound scan revealed her little one's limbs were not developing.

After being advised to terminate her pregnancy, Ms Self and her boyfriend Rondell Wilson decided to not to give up on their baby.

Another inspiration case is Nicholas James Vujicic, born in 1982, who was also born with the syndrome.

The Australian father-of-four is now a renowned motivational speaker and author of several books.

He has travelled to more than 44 countries to advocate positivity and motivation despite his circumstances.

He offers his guidance and sharing his story with school students, prison inmates and community groups.

Speaking to 60 Minutes in an interview last year alongside his wife, Kanae, he revealed that schoolyard bullies were often cruel and by age 10 he had attempted to take his own life.

One in three pilots in Pakistan are flying with fake licenses, investigation reveals

A third of all pilots in Pakistan are flying with fake licences after paying people to sit their exam for them, it has been revealed.

Ghulam Sargar Khan, the country's aviation minister, announced the shocking find amid a probe into the Karachi plane crash which killed 97 people in May.

Out of 860 pilots currently licenced in Pakistan, investigators identified 262 who 'did not take the exam themselves' and 'don't have flying experience', he said.

Pakistan International Airlines, the airline which operated the crashed plane, has today grounded 150 of its pilots who are suspected of having cheated their way through their exam.

Abdullah Hafeez, a spokesman for Pakistan International Airlines, said the airline is now in the process of sacking the pilots.

'We will make it sure that unqualified pilots never fly aircraft again,' he said.

Khan made the revelation about licences while presenting preliminary findings to parliament of a probe into the Airbus A320 crash last month.

Pakistan Airlines flight 8303 flight from Lahore crashed as it attempted to land in Karachi on May 22.

The pilots had aborted one landing and were going around for a second attempt when the aircraft dropped into a residential area, killing 97 of the 99 on board.

Announcing the results of a preliminary investigation Wednesday, Khan said 'overconfident' pilot Sajjad Gull had attempted to land with the wheels up.

He said Gull and his copilot were 'distracted' and talking about coronavirus during the botched landing.

'The [virus] was on their minds. Their families were affected and they were having a discussion about it,' Khan said.

The pair had turned autopilot off and ignored repeated warnings from air traffic control that they were descending too fast and from too great an altitude.

Previous analysis of black box recordings also suggest Gull ignored alarms that were sounding in the cockpit as he made the failed landing.

Air traffic control saw the plane's engines scrape the runway, leaving them damaged, but did not warn the pilot before the plane pulled back into the sky, Khan said.

Both engines then failed, causing the crash.

The report found that the aircraft itself was '100 percent fit for flying', despite being grounded for 46 days prior amid coronavirus lockdown.

The Sun and Johnny Depp lawsuits get dirtier as paper reveals more dirt on him... he does 'cocaine and ecstasy' too

Johnny Depp sent texts to his personal assistant apparently ordering him to buy cocaine and ecstasy, the High Court has heard.

The texts were among a string the Pirates of the Caribbean star failed to reveal in his ongoing legal action against The Sun -- breaching a court order to disclose relevant evidence.

In one message he wrote: “Need more whitey stuff ASAP brotherman -- and the e-business!!!

“Please I’m in a bad bad shape. Say NOTHING to NOBODY!!!!”

Depp, 57, is suing The Sun for libel over an article that referred to him as “a wife beater”.

The Sun’s lawyers say the texts cast doubt on the actor’s insistence he did not take drugs prior to an argument with then-wife Amber Heard, during which she says he attacked her. Depp denies violence.

The texts were exchanged between Depp and assistant Nathan Holmes between February 25 and March 7, 2015 — just before the alleged attack.

It is suggested Depp was trying to obtain ecstasy pills and cocaine while drinking heavily.

In one exchange, Depp seemingly admonishes Holmes for failing to get him more drugs.

His message reads: “F****** give me the goddam numbers. I’ll take care of this s***!!!

“I’m a grown man and I will NOT BE JUDGED. AND I WILL NEVER EVER LIVE IN THIS WORLD CAGE ANY LONGER.”

Other messages refer to “happy pills” and wanting to be “ecstatic again”.

It is believed the texts were sent while Depp was in Australia filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge.

Depp’s case could now be thrown out after Mr Justice Nicol ruled he did breach the disclosure of evidence order by not revealing the texts.

Adam Wolanski QC, representing The Sun, said Depp’s behaviour showed he had “forfeited the right” to pursue his case in court.

He added: “He has demonstrated contempt for our courts and for your Lordship. The absence of any contrition from him or an apology, demonstrates a breathtaking arrogance.

“This directly demonstrates that he is not telling the truth on an important matter at the heart of this case.

“If this evidence was missed, what else has been missed?”

Mr Wolanski said Depp’s failure to disclose meant The Sun would have been denied a fair hearing.

Depp accepts the evidence should have been disclosed.

But his lawyers told the court the failure was due to a mistaken understanding of what was relevant and the case should continue.

Depp’s lawyers also denied he had “threatened and intimidated” Aquaman star Ms Heard, 34, in an attempt to stop her helping The Sun’s case.

The actress is due to give evidence for The Sun.

The allegations of violence were in an article by Sun executive editor Dan Wootton, who is also being sued by Depp.

The Sun’s publisher, News Group Newspapers, has applied to have the case kicked out after Depp’s texts were revealed in a US libel case.

Federal Government slashes fees for conduct of marriages

The Federal Government has slashed the fees chargeable for services related to conduct of statutory marriage in the country.

It said the review of the fees, which come under the Marriage Act CAP M6 LFN 2004, would commence from Wednesday, 1st July.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, made the disclosure in a public notice by the Permanent Secretary and Principal Registrar of Marriages in Nigeria, Georgina Ehuriah.

A statement from the Director of press in the ministry, Mohammed Manga, quoted the Minister as saying that the adjustment was an off-shoot of the recommendations made by stakeholders at the Sensitization Conferences held across the country in the third quarter of 2019.

According to him, the fees chargeable for the Issuance of Fresh Marriage Licence to a place of Public Worship has been reduced from N30,000 for two (2) years to N6,000 yearly, payable for five years in the first instance.

For the renewal of marriage licence by a place of public worship, N5,000 has been approved per year, payable for three (3) years at each instance, as against the N30,000 earlier charged annually, he said.

The fees chargeable for statutory ordinary marriage has also been cut down from N21,000 to N15,000 while that of statutory special licence has been slashed from N35,000 to N25,000.

Aregbesola noted a link has been created on the ministry’s website; (https://ift.tt/333Un9S) to enable states and local governments access the Ministry’s automation platform for services relating to the conduct of Statutory Marriage in the country.

The Minister called on stakeholders to take advantage of the reduction in fees to licence their places of public worship and continue to celebrate statutory marriage as specified by the Law.

Ondo Deputy Governor disowns campaign posters

Ondo State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, has dissociated himself from posters carrying his photograph, campaigning for governorship under the platform of the Social Democratic Party.

His posters in SDP had flooded the social media lately.

Ajayi, who recently joined the Peoples Democratic Party, said he remained loyal to the party and did not have any link with any other party.

Speaking through his media, Allen Sowore, the deputy governor said the matter was the handiwork of mischief makers, who had tried unsuccessfully to pitch him with the leadership of the PDP.

India bans TikTok, 50 Chinese-made apps

The Indian government has banned TikTok, the hugely popular social media app, as part of sweeping anti-China measures after a violent confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops.

TikTok is one of more than 50 Chinese-made apps that have been banned by the Ministry of Information over concerns that they “pose a threat to sovereignty and security” of India.

While the government notice issuing the ban did not explicitly mention China by name, it is only Chinese-made apps that have been blacklisted. It comes after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in the confrontation with Chinese troops along their disputed Himalayan border.

India has accused China of infringing on national sovereignty by moving thousands of troops and artillery, as well as building infrastructure, into disputed territory in Ladakh. The clash two weeks ago was the worst conflict between India and China in 60 years, and despite pledges on both sides to de-escalate, recent satellite footage appears to show China solidifying their presence along the poorly defined border.

The decision to ban TikTok, an app where people upload short videos, is likely to cause reverberations through India, where it has more than 200 million users and is the most downloaded app in the country. It has become a central part of popular culture in India, with some TikTok celebrities boasting tens of million of followers.

The Indian government said the decision to ban the apps was in order to protect the data and privacy of its 1.3 billion citizens and put a stop to technology that was “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers outside India”.

Since the buildup of Chinese troops and violent clash at the border, there have been growing calls for a boycott of Chinese goods and investment.

The government has already announced plans to impose higher trade barriers and raise import duties on about 300 products from China, as well as ban Chinese companies from bidding on telecom projects in India. The Delhi Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association, which represents more than 3,000 establishments in the capital, has also recently banned all Chinese nationals from their hotels and restaurants.

Baby girl has FULL head of hair before she was EVEN born

At her 34-week scan, Alexandra Jechorek was shocked to realise her baby girl had a full head of hair before she was even born.

Her locks were so thick, they could be seen clearly on the screen while she was still in her mum’s womb.

And when she was born six weeks later, baby Maya had a glossy mane and her parnets office worker boyfriend, Lee Bond, 23 – stay-at-home mum Alexandra, 21, were amazed. Alexandra, of Dublin, Ireland, said: ‘We’d already found out we were expecting a girl at the previous scan, so at 34 weeks, we were just excited to see how much she’d grown.

‘When the midwife turned the screen around, I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes. ‘There was this tiny little baby on the scan with a full head of hair.

I just thought, “No way, this cannot be possible”. ‘To be completely honest, I thought all babies were born bald. My oldest Kadin came out bald, so I just thought that was how babies were when they were born.

‘But once I’d taken in how much hair she had, it made me all the more excited to meet her, as Maya already looked like a proper little person.’ On June 9, 2019 after a swift 90 minute labour, Maya was born at The Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital, in Dublin, weighing 8lbs 9oz – and her full head of dark hair caused quite a storm. Alexandra laughed: ‘As soon as Maya arrived, I couldn’t take my eyes off her hair.

‘I’d been expecting her to have hair because of the scan, but to see this beautiful baby with this thick jet black hair was incredible.

‘It had already grown so long it was down past her ears. ‘Even the nurses and the doctors turned to me and said they’d never seen a baby with so much hair in all the time they’d worked at the hospital!’ And from when she was born, her hair has always attracted attention. ‘We couldn’t leave the house without someone complimenting Maya on her hair,’ Alexandra said.

‘Lots of people would ask, “How old is she?” They were shocked when I told them she was only three months old with so much hair!’ While Alexandra has never measured her daughter’s locks, she says that, now one years old, it is so long that it skims the top of her nappy, even though she’s just turned one.

She said: ‘I’ve never had her hair cut. I think it’s absolutely beautiful and I want her to grow it as long as she wants.’ Having such long hair means Maya has already been able to experiment with a host of different styles – which she shows off on her very own Instagram site, where she already has 300 followers.

‘Maya’s really good she always sits still and lets me do her hair,’ said Alexandra. ‘I do it in plaits and sometimes I tie it in a ponytail. ‘I love putting bow clips in her hair. I have different colours, like pink, blue, red and yellow, to match the different outfits that she wears.’ But it does mean Maya has quite a demanding beauty routine considering her age. ‘I shampoo and conditioner her hair every day,’ said Alexandra.

‘People love looking at pictures of Maya – they can’t get enough of her hair,’ she said. ‘I usually post pictures of her different hairstyles or of her playing with Kadin. ‘But the comments are always about how amazing Maya’s hair is.’

With no family history of babies with hair, Alexandra says Maya’s amazing mop is a complete fluke.

She said: ‘I’ve asked around my family and Lee’s to see if anyone else was born with hair like Maya’s, but everyone’s told me no, so it must’ve just been a fluke.

A screenwriter, Cassandra Owolabi, had accused the popular actress of physically, emotionally and financially abusing her staff.

She alleged that Funke strictly supervises them and this led her to depression.

”…For instance, we couldn’t watch TV (literally, the TV in our lodge was taken away weeks after we resumed) and she mustn’t walk in on you watching anything on your laptop (can’t tell you how many times she randomly sent people to come to check if we were sleeping or doing anything asides writing)”

National Assembly stops electricity tariff hike

The leadership of the National Assembly on Monday convinced the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to defer the planned hike in electricity tariff till the first quarter of 2021.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan made this known in a statement on behalf of the leadership in Abuja.

The statement by Mr Ola Awoniyi, Special Adviser (Media) to Lawan said the lawmakers waded into the controversy due to the planned hike in electricity tariffs from July 1.

Lawan said that Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila and other principal officers of the two Chambers met with the Chief Executives of the government electricity regulatory body and DISCOs across the country.

“The National Assembly leaders were emphatic at the meeting that the timing of the planned hike is wrong, even though they had not much issue in introducing a cost reflective tariffs for the power sector to attract the much needed investment.

“The agreement here is that there is not going to be any increase in the tariffs on July 1. The speaker and I, we are going to take appropriate action and meet with President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We are in agreement here that there is no question on the justification of the increase but the time is simply not right and appropriate measures need to be put in place

“So, between now and the first quarter of next year, our task will be to work together to ensure that we put those blocks in place to support the eventual increase in tariffs,” he said.

Lawan said that government had been doing a lot as part of its obligations to provide some form of intervention.

“I’m quite aware that for this year, probably starting from last year, over N600 billion was earmarked for this sector to improve.

“The potential increase in the tariffs is definitely something that will be of concern to the National Assembly.

“There is too much stress in the lives of Nigerians and indeed across the world because of the challenges imposed by COVID-19 pandemic.

”Before then, we had issues that will always make it tough for people to effectively pay the tariffs.

“One way or the other, for this business to flourish, for this sector to be appropriately fixed, for it to attract investment, something has to give way.

”There is no doubt about that but it is also crucial that we look at the timing for any of our actions,” Lawan said.

Bethlehem shut down for 48 hours due to rise in coronavirus infections

Bethlehem will be temporarily closed for 48 hours following a spike in coronavirus cases in Palestine's West Bank.

The city-wide closure will begin Monday from 6.00AM and will last for 48 hours, governor Kamil Hmeid said.

This announcement comes after West Bank cities of Hebron and Nablus were closed last week following a major rise in infection cases.

Hebron was closed for five days, and Nablus was shutdown for 48 hours.

Palestinian health ministers announced 67 new cases on Saturday, 33 of which were in the Bethlehem district.

The ministry has recorded a total of 1,552 virus cases in the West Bank, including two deaths.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem stands at 1,862, with 11 people in serious condition, including two on ventilators, said PA Health Minister Mai al-Kaila.

Like the West Bank, Israel has also recorded a recent surge in coronavirus cases.

Meanwhile, in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian enclave blockaded by Israel, 72 people have tested positive for coronavirus, with one death.

Bethlehem, where Christians believe Christ was born, was initially put into lockdown in March, after recording the first coronavirus case in the West Bank.

Schools were closed and non-essential travel and activities were that month banned, as part of the efforts to tackle the virus.

Woman claimed to be world's oldest celebrates her 134th birthday [photos]

The woman claimed to be the oldest person on earth has just had her 134th birthday party.

Almihan Seyiti is said to have been born in 1886 – two years before Jack the Ripper began his reign of terror in London.

On Thursday officials threw a banquet for her in the Uigur region of Shule, south west China.

According to local media, Almihan, whose life has spanned three centuries, enjoys singing and playing musical instruments.

Married at 17 and a widow for 44 years, she is said to be in good health and can still hear and see, although walking is difficult.

Almihan became China’s oldest citizen in 2013 when she was 127.

She has an identity card listing her date of birth as June 25, 1886 but has became the focus of some international scrutiny as a result of her unverifiable birth records from the era of the Guangxu Emperor.

Guinness World Records said it had not been invited to independently verify Almihan’s age.

But she is accredited by London-registered Carrying the Flag World Records and Shanghai China Records.

It means she could be 27 years older than Guinness’s oldest living person, Japan’s Kane Tanaka, who turned 117 in January.

Guinness World Records has France’s Jeanne Louise Calment as the world’s oldest person ever.

She died in 1997, at the age of 122.

However, the unverified nature of Almihan’s claim has not stop-ped her enjoying her annual birthday celebrations.

Her family said: “She just loves a crowd.”
