Are you in the habit of eating suya, akara (bean cake) and other fried and roasted foods wrapped in printed paper? Experts have warned that such foods are inimical to health because chemicals in the printed paper include lead, a toxic substance that has been linked to the development of low IQ, kidney damage, anaemia and cancer.
Dr Ishiaq Omostosho, a specialist advisor to University College Hospital, Ibadan on toxicology, stated that lead often leaches into food items, especially the fried ones, when it is used as a food wrapper.
The biochemical toxicologist, who remarked that it was misnomer to wrap cooked foods in things such as newspapers or printed leaflets, declared that there is hardly any ink that does not contain lead
“It is an additive to ink to ensure whatever is printed does not easily rub off, fade and that it lasts long,” he declared.
According to him, lead leaches at a faster rate into food when such is packed when hot and when such a food is fried.
Omotosho added that the grade of paper the wrapper is made with can also affect how much of chemical substances it will leach when used as a food wrapper.The expert remarked that the negative effect of chemicals such as lead when they leach into food is not immediate, adding “the chemicals keep accumulating in the body and only manifest later as chronic diseases such as anaemia, kidney problem and so on.”
According to him, “it is actually the kidney derailment as an effect of lead toxicity that precipitates other problems, especially in people that are seriously exposed.”
However, he added that work is on going to fully understand if ingestion of lead can cause cancer.
“There has been a lot of hypothesis implicating lead and other toxic metals like cadmium and mercury as causative agents of cancer. But lead is still being subjected to a lot of verification,” he said.
Nonetheless, he stated the possibility of cadmium leaching out of a paper used to wrap cigarette, adding that what the paper was previously used to pack also determines how and to what extent it would impart any food it is wrapped with negatively or positively.
Although environmentalists preach recycling of paper, he said there is no harm using a recycled paper for toileting, but not as a cooked food wrapper.
Omotosho, however, warned that children are more vulnerable to lead toxicity, be it from paints, printed paper or toys, adding that there is no safe level of lead exposure.
“The effect of lead exposure by a small kid may not manifest until 10 to 20 years, when the impairment on the brain would have occurred. Often the brain damage may not be reversible,” he said.
Head, Department of Chemical Pathology, College of Medicine, Ibadan, Professor Ganiyu Arinola, stated that other things such as plastics and nylons used in wrapping food, are also bad for health.
Arinola remarked that dioxin, a cancerous substance, is released when plastics are used to microwave food, thus making the food unsuitable for consumption.
Arinola, who noted that wrapping of foods in printed paper should be discouraged, added that use of local wrapping leaves was better.
“It is far better to wrap in leaves rather than paper because the leaf also gives the food a particular flavour. It is for the same reason that wrapping moin moin in leaves is better than nylon,” he declared.

The police in Bauchi have arrested, Juliana James, a mother-of-six, who threw her day-old baby into a soakaway pit after being delivered of the child at home, the Punch is reporting.
The suspect, who wept bitterly when paraded at the police headquarters in Bauchi on Friday, said she was forced to dispose off the child because of economic hardship as she could not include the burden of taking care of it together with her six other children.
“Things are hard. My husband has no job. He had an accident three months ago and it affected his manhood. He is still in the hospital receiving treatment.
The day-old baby was rescued alive after 12 hours of being inside the pit when her cry attracted neighbours who rushed it to the Abubakar Tafawa University Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
Addressing newsmen, Commissioner of Police in the state, Zaki Ahmed, said the case was being investigated, revealing that the baby had been handed over to social welfare officers at the hospital.
The worrying trend of new mothers disposing their newborns is becoming very alarming. Just last month, the police arrested an 18-year-old who dumped her four-month-old baby under the Oshodi bridge in Lagos.
Late last year, residents of Uyo watched as an abandoned baby cries herself to death. Nobody tried to rescue her for fear of being arrested by the police.

Today, the Nollywood actress took to her Instagram to share a collage of her photos with her octogenarian dad with a caption announcing his death.
“RIP dad,” the actress, and this opened a floodgate of condolences from fans on her social media.
The actress has always had a close relationship with her father. In her September interview with Razzle Dazzle, Badmus revealed she is the 13th child of her father who has 21 living children.
“My growing up was beautiful. I was born into the family of Badmus Ogunsina,” the comic actress said, adding, “I was properly trained and well cultured like any other girl. We were taught to love ourselves and never discriminate against anyone. I come from a large family of 21 children and I am the 13th.
She continued, “We all eat together as one family; some of us go on vacation together during summer and we all wine and dine together.”
Last October, when he turned 85, she celebrated him with the most heartwarming photos and words.
“I am what I am today only because of the presence of a special someone in my life. On your Birthday today, I fail to find enough words to express my gratitude and wishes for you. Reverend King who is currently on death row after he was found guilty of setting a member of his church on fire, turned a year older, and his church members decided to celebrate him by placing several adverts on the pages of a popular newspaper.
The church members who believe that he is being persecuted just like Jesus Christ in the Bible, believe that ‘his Holiness’ will be saved from death.
According to a post shared on Facebook by one Babasola Kuti, the members of the church paid for 13 full colour pages, in Thisday Newspaper, in Rev King’s honour.
Sharing the story on his page, Kuti wrote:

Two National Youth Service Corps members have lost their lives in a tragic accident after a speeding jeep veered off the road and collided with a Jetta car along Mountain of Fire camp ground in Delta state.
