INEC gives dates for 2019 general elections

In a statement posted on its website Thursday, the electoral commission said it was making the announcements well ahead “in order to ensure certainty in our dates for elections, and to allow for proper planning by the Commission, political parties, security agencies, candidates and all stakeholders”.

“To that extent, the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on Saturday, 16th February 2019, while the Governorship/State Assembly/Federal Capital Territory Area Council Elections will hold on Saturday 2nd March 2019.”

The commission also announced that 23 of its electoral officers being prosecuted for various electoral offences will be placed on half salary and will not report for duty pending the determination of their respective cases by the court.

Gentlemen of the Press, 

You are all welcome to yet another briefing, which is in fulfillment of our pledge to regularly brief the public on the Commission’s activities. 

1. Our democracy is maturing and the Commission believes that there should be certainty with regard to the timetable for elections. For instance, in the United States, general elections always hold on the second PRESS Tuesday of November in the election year. In Ghana, it’s the 7th of December of the election year, while in other places like Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Costa Rica and Switzerland, the dates are also known in advance.

In Nigeria, the constitution provides for elections to hold not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days to the end of the incumbent’s tenure. In order to ensure certainty in our dates for elections, and to allow for proper planning by the Commission, political parties, security agencies, candidates and all stakeholders, the Commission has decided to fix the date for the National Elections for the third Saturday in February of the election year, followed by State elections two weeks later. To that extent, the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on Saturday, 16th February 2019, while the Governorship/State Assembly/Federal Capital Territory Area Council Elections will hold on Saturday 2nd March 2019. 

2. The Commission has also received a Report from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) of the Federation, informing us that 23 Electoral Officers indicted over the investigation into the 10th December Rivers Re-run elections have been charged to court. The Commission has repeatedly said that it will cooperate with security agencies for the prosecution of any of our staff found to have violated the integrity of the electoral process. Accordingly, at our meeting today, the Commission decided to apply the provisions of the INEC Terms and Conditions of Service to all those charged to court, since it constitutes gross misconduct. The penalty for this is interdiction. All the 23 Electoral Officers will be placed on half salary and will not report for duty pending the determination of their respective cases by the court. 

3. Ladies and gentlemen, you will recall that last week, we informed you that a decision would be taken this week on the recommendation by the Disciplinary Committee on staff members indicted by the EFCC Report for misconduct during the 2015 General Elections. However, in view of the fact that some of the staff are also among those being prosecuted by the DPP, the Commission has decided to defer its decision on the EFCC Report to enable us reconcile the EFCC/DPP reports. 

4. And as part of our routine consultations with our stakeholders, the Commission has decided to hold the next regular quarterly meetings with stakeholders as follows:
A. Tuesday 14th March –Meeting with Political Parties
B. Wednesday 15th March – Meeting with Civil Society Organizations
C. Friday 17th March – Meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
D. Monday March 21 – Meeting with Media organizations. Our invitations have been sent to the respective stakeholders. 

5. We wish to assure all Nigerians that the Commission will remain fully committed to the sanctity of the electoral process and will never protect any of its staff, no matter highly placed, found to have violated the provisions of the Electoral Act and our guidelines.

Facebook Owner, Mark Zuckerberg and wife, Priscilla Expecting Baby Number 2

The CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg's wife Priscilla Chan is pregnant with their second child, another baby girl, just as he'd hoped. The two are parents to daughter Max, 1.

"Priscilla and I are happy to share we're expecting another baby girl!" Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook Thursday. "After our difficult experience having Max, we weren't sure what to expect or whether we'd be able to have another child."

The couple's daughter turned 1 just this past November. They had announced Chan's pregnancy with her in December 2015, saying they had been trying to conceive for a couple of years and she had experienced three miscarriages before becoming pregnant with Max.

"When Priscilla and I first found out she was pregnant again, our first hope was that the child would be healthy," Zuckerberg wrote Thursday. "My next hope was that it would be a girl. I cannot think of a greater gift than having a sister and I'm so happy Max and our new child will have each other."

Zuckerberg said he grew up with three sisters who taught him how to "learn from smart, strong women," while his wife also has two sisters. Neither have brothers. He included childhood pics of the two with their sisters.

"They weren't just my sisters but some of my best friends," he said. "They've gone on to write books, excel at performance, music, sports, cooking and their careers. They showed me how to compete and still laugh together afterwards. Priscilla grew up with two sisters and they taught her the importance of family, caring for others and hard work. They supported each other as first generation college students and in their careers in medicine and business. They have so many inside jokes—the kind only siblings can understand. We are all better people because of the strong women in our lives—sisters, mothers and friends."

"We can't wait to welcome our new little one and do our best to raise another strong woman," Zuckerberg said.

Two Suicide Bombers Kill 26 At Iraq Wedding Celebration

Suicide bombers have blown themselves up, killing 26 people, as wedding guests gathered in a village near the Iraqi city of Tikrit.

So-called Islamic State said two of its fighters had carried out the attack in the village of Hajaj on Wednesday.

The first detonated an explosive vest among men who were dancing, then a second bomber targeted those who had gathered to help, officials said.
 Most of the dead were children, a local government spokesman told AP.

IS said it had targeted a gathering of the Popular Mobilization Forces, a coalition of mostly Shia paramilitaries backed by Iran.

In a post on its channels on the messaging app Telegram, IS said the attackers had clashed with members of the group before detonating their explosives.

At least 25 people were wounded.

The Bill for Establishment of “Traditional Medicine Council of Nigeria” Passes 3rd Reading

Bill for an Act to provide for the establishment of complementary and alternative medicine commission passed for third reading in the House of Representatives.

Also passed for third reading is a bill for an act to provide for the establishment of the Traditional Medicine Council of Nigeria.

The consolidated bills, which was sponsored by Rep. Nasiru Garo (Kano-APC) and two other lawmakers, seek to encourage, promote and regulate traditional medicine practice in Nigeria.

While speaking on the bills, Garo said that the importance of complementary and alternative medicine also known as traditional medicine cannot be over emphasised.

According to him, in every nook and cranny of our great country there is availability of people that provide complementary and alternative medicine services.

“I believe most of us here have benefited from the knowledge and experience of those people especially in the rural areas. In fact, a lot of people rely on it for their medical needs and others rely on it as their source of income and livelihood. The challenge is that there is no legislation to regulate the practice of this highly important and sensitive activity.”

The lawmaker said this lack of regulation exposed the practice to “unethical, crude and sharp practices by quacks and people who know nothing in the field of complementary and alternative medicine’’.

This he said could lead to a dire consequence which was better imagined rather than experienced.

Garo further said that people had suffered a lot in the hands of fake traditional medical practitioners while some had even lost loved ones.

“The purpose of this bill is to establish an agency of government that can regulate, monitor and create acceptable standard in alternative and traditional medicine industry as well as eliminate quacks.

The agency will implement all those recommendations and there will be many other benefits which include `saving people’s lives by eliminating quacks’.

It will create jobs and wealth for people who are willing to learn and adopt traditional medicine practice as a genuine profession and generate income for our nation by its conversion from informal to formal sector of the economy,” he said.

He said that World Health Organisation (WHO), which Nigeria is a part of, made recommendations to all member countries at a congress of traditional medicine held in Beijing China.

The recommendations, he said, were that each nation should have national policy on complementary and alternative medicine as well as national regulation of traditional and herbal medicine.

The lawmaker also said that the WHO recommended research on traditional, complementary and alternative medicine as well as its use in primary health care.

“Some countries around the world are already enjoying this kind of policy because herbal medicine can be found anywhere today in the world at decent stores and at conventional drug stores.

That means income for the producer of that medicine as well the originating country.

In China for example, herbal therapy is provided in state hospitals alongside conventional medicine; which means the two systems of traditional and western medicine need not clash.

They can rather blend together in a beneficial harmony especially at primary health care level.”

The bill passed through second reading by members when the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, put it to a voice vote.

A woman dying of cancer writes dating profile for her husband and it is heartbreaking

The prolific children's book author, Amy Krouse Rosenthal, 51 is suffering from ovarian cancer and fearing that she has just a few days to live, she wrote a note about their 'epic love story' in the hopes of guiding her husband to find love again after she's gone.

Amy who is a successful author of adult and children's book has been married for 26 years to Jason Brian Rosenthal, 52 and from her story, theirs was a fairy tale relationship. Jason's profile as written by his sick wife was first published in the New York Times and has since been shared by other news sites. In her note, Amy made Jason out to be a perfect prince and a lot of people have been moved to tears by the beautiful piece.

I HAVE been trying to write this for a while but the morphine and lack of juicy cheeseburgers (what has it been now, five weeks without real food?) have drained my energy and interfered with whatever prose prowess remains.

Additionally, the intermittent micronaps that keep whisking me away mid-sentence are clearly not propelling my work forward as quickly as I would like. But they are, admittedly, a bit of trippy fun.

Still, I have to stick with it, because I’m facing a deadline, in this case, a pressing one. I need to say this (and say it right) while I have a) your attention, and b) a pulse.

I have been married to the most extraordinary man for 26 years. I was planning on at least another 26 together.

Want to hear a sick joke? A husband and wife walk into the emergency room in the late evening on September 5, 2015.

A few hours and tests later, the doctor clarifies that the unusual pain the wife is feeling on her right side isn’t the no-biggie appendicitis they suspected but rather ovarian cancer.

As the couple head home in the early morning of September 6, somehow through the foggy shock of it all, they make the connection that today, the day they learned what had been festering, is also the day they would have officially kicked off their empty-nesting.

The youngest of their three children had just left for college.

So many plans instantly went poof. No trip with my husband and parents to South Africa. No dream tour of Asia with my mother. No writers’ residencies at those wonderful schools in India, Vancouver, Jakarta.

No wonder the word cancer and cancel look so similar.

This is when we entered what I came to think of as Plan “Be”, existing only in the present. As for the future, allow me to introduce you to the gentleman of this article, Jason Brian Rosenthal.

He is an easy man to fall in love with. I did it in one day.

Let me explain: My father’s best friend since summer camp, “Uncle” John, had known Jason and me separately our whole lives but Jason and I had never met. I went to college out east and took my first job in California.

When I moved back home to Chicago, John — who thought Jason and I were perfect for each other — set us up on a blind date.

It was 1989. We were only 24. I had precisely zero expectations about this going anywhere. But when he knocked on the door of my little frame house, I thought, “Uh-oh, there is something highly likable about this person.”

By the end of dinner, I knew I wanted to marry him. Jason? He knew a year later.

I’ve never been on Tinder, Bumble or eHarmony but I’m going to create a general profile for Jason right here, based on my experience of co-existing in the same house with him for, like, 9,490 days.

First, the basics: He is 5ft 10in, 11st 6lb, with salt-and-pepper hair and hazel eyes.

The following list of attributes is in no particular order because every- thing feels important to me in some way.

He is a sharp dresser. Our young adult sons, Justin and Miles, often borrow his clothes. Those who know him — or just happen to glance down at the gap between his dress slacks and dress shoes — know that he has a flair for fabulous socks. He is fit and enjoys keeping in shape.

If our home could speak, it would add that Jason is uncannily handy. On the subject of food, man, can he cook.

Jason loves listening to live music — it’s our favourite thing to do together. I should also add that our 19-year-old daughter, Paris, would rather go to a concert with him than anyone else.

When I was working on my first memoir, my editor would say: “I’d like to see more of this character.”

Of course, I would agree — he was indeed captivating. But it was funny because she could have just said: “Jason. Let’s add more about Jason.”

He is an absolutely wonderful father. Ask anyone. See that guy on the corner? Go ahead and ask him, he’ll tell you. Jason is compassionate — and he can flip a pancake.

Jason paints. I love his artwork. I would call him an artist except for the law degree that keeps him at his downtown office most days from 9 to 5. Or at least it did before I got sick.

If you’re looking for a dreamy, let’s-go-for-it travel companion, Jason is your man. He also has an affinity for tiny things: Taster spoons, little jars, a mini sculpture of a couple sitting on a bench, which he presented to me as a reminder of how our family began.

Here is the kind of man Jason is: He showed up at our first pregnancy ultrasound with flowers.

This is a man who, because he is always up early, surprises me every Sunday morning by making an oddball smiley face out of items near the coffee pot — a spoon, a mug, a banana.

This is a man who emerges from the gas station and says: “Give me your palm.” And, voilà, a colourful gumball appears. (He knows I love all flavours but white.)

My guess is you know enough about him now. So let’s swipe right.

Wait. Did I mention that he is incredibly handsome? I’m going to miss looking at that face of his.

If he sounds like a prince and our relationship seems like a fairy tale, it’s not too far off, except for all of the regular stuff that comes from two-and-a-half decades of playing house together.

And the part about me getting cancer. Blech.

In my most recent memoir (written before my diagnosis), I invited readers to send in suggestions for matching tattoos, the idea being that author and reader would be bonded by ink.

Hundreds poured in. A few weeks after publication in August, I heard from a 62-year-old librarian in Milwaukee named Paulette.

She suggested the word “more”, based on an essay in the book where I mention that “more” was my first spoken word (true). And now it may very well be my last (time shall tell).

In September, Paulette met me at a Chicago tattoo parlour. She got hers (her very first) on her left wrist. I got mine on the underside of my left forearm, in my daughter’s handwriting.

This was my second tattoo. The first is a small “j” that has been on my ankle for 25 years. You can probably guess what it stands for. Jason has one too but with more letters: “AKR.”

I want more time with Jason. I want more time with my children. I want more time sipping martinis at the Green Mill Jazz Club on Thursday nights. But that is not going to happen.

I probably have only a few days left being a person on this planet. So why am I doing this?

I am wrapping this up on Valentine’s Day, and the most genuine, non-vase-oriented gift I can hope for is that the right person reads this, finds Jason and another love story begins.

Adenrele Sonariwo Explores the Role of Women in the Arts Space as The World Celebrate InternationalWomensDay2017

Adenrele Sonariwo is an arts curator, and the founder of Rele Arts Gallery in Lagos, Nigeria. As part of the activities to mark International Women’s day this year, we reached out to her for an insight regarding being a female entrepreneur in the contemporary art space in Nigeria.

‘Denrele describes herself as a ‘lover of the arts’. This love, however, did not come overnight, but it has bloomed over the years. While she was in the corporate world, and looking for an outlet for expression outside of work, art found her.

When asked to describe what it is like to be a young business woman in the arts, she says simply: “I stand on the shoulders of trailblazers who have come before me, paving the way for us younger ones to thrive.”

In speaking about female mentors in the arts that she looks up to, she said: “I look up to Marian Goodman, a galleries, and Thelma Golden a Curator – both very well respected and influential. I look up to them because of their quiet strength and longevity in the arts industry. I think what is really profound for me even as we celebrate International Woman’s Day with a theme of #BeBoldForChange is understanding that boldness can be subtle. And with these 2 women I love the subtle, not in your face way in which they have owned their spaces. They are my mentors in my head, I follow their work and read about them. It will be the honour of my life to meet them in person.

In the Nigerian space, I really like Mama Nike Davies-Okundaye, female power artist and owner of Nike Art Gallery.  Her spirit is simple amazing and endearing. There’s also Mrs Bolanle Austen-Peters (Terra Kulture), Mrs Sandra Obiago (SMO Contemporary) and Mrs Sinmi Ogunsanya (MyDrim Gallery), who have been in the arts industry here in Nigeria for decades. I admire them…from afar.”

However, Adenrele is setting the stage to be a trailblazer herself;  her gallery, continues to host diverse contemporary art highlighting women. Recently, Rele Gallery was home to five young female artists as they displayed their work in an exhibition called ‘Her Story’ . The artists Oluchi Chuks Zom, Queen Nwaneri, Buki M. Animashaun, Ayoola Kekere-Ekun and Haneefah Adam, flew the flag of feminism and through their work, they show the power of being women.

On speaking of Rele gallery’s attention to an all-female cast exhibition, Adenrele noted that this was the second of its kind. “We did one like this last year and accompanied it with something we title Rele Mentorship March. They are free Mentorship sessions given to young females. We’re going to do it again this year.”

Her Story is described in the Rele press release as “… an expression of diverse stories to create awareness and also propagate conversations. Each artist brought to canvas a unique expression of their stories through the eyes of a woman. Going further than just story-telling, the exhibition sought for a celebration of feminine virtues; the quiet strength in survival and sheer joy from the victory of conquering. It was an female art exhibition that celebrated feminine virtues, the quiet strength in being a woman, and the joy from the victory of conquering.

Adenrele spoke of what inspired the selection of these artists, stating that the intention was to show a unique group of artists, working in multi-dimensional mediums to share their varied stories. She went on to explain further: “It was personal and very important that we saw through their eyes and expression. We wanted them to share with us stories they wanted to tell, as a female and as an artist.”

Adenrele noted that art is very important in the quest for equal rights for women because “art can be used as soft power to draw attention to, and to significantly influence, matters that affects us women.”

As a curator of art, she is doing her part to make sure that women are empowered, well represented, and certainly not left out of the narrative. However, as a woman within the socio-economic dynamics of Nigeria, one wonders how Rele has continued to make such impressive strides.  To that, she responds without a pause: “I never think a door is closed to me because I’m female. If a door doesn’t open, I look for means to break it down. In the words of Kerry James Marshall, we have to take our seat on the table we want, no one is going to open the door for us. I don’t spend too much time thinking if I was female…., this could mean as they say, that I’ll need to work twice as hard. Sure, it builds up more character in me, but I’ve seen this pay off in my ability to adapt in most situations. ”

Women’s rights to her as a business person is simply asking to be treated as an entrepreneur, and to be given the same opportunities as a male entrepreneur. As a young entrepreneur, women’s rights means to be given a chance to live her life on her own terms, and not to be discriminated against.

So where does she see women in the arts in the future of Nigeria? “ I see us becoming bolder, more visible and super influential.”
