A Drama As Magistrate Rescues Accused From ‘Abduction’
It was a drama yesterday at the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, when an attempt by some policemen to arrest an accused, Alhaji Mutairu Owoeye, alleged to have jumped bail over same case he was being tried for, was foiled by the magistrate.
When the accused raised alarm that he was being abducted, presiding magistrate, Mrs Awogboro, insisted that the accused be left alone, faulting the warrant of arrest.
It was gathered that yesterday’s incident was the second attempt to arrest Owoeye in one month.
The policemen, led by a Sergeant identified simply as Olumide, had explained to the magistrate that the directive to arrest the accused followed an order from an unnamed Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Force Criminal Investigation Bureau in Abuja.
Docked in 3 courts
One of the counsel to Owoeye, Bayo Omoniyi, revealed that Owoeye, his son and four others had so far been arraigned in three different courts over same offence.
Policemen, as gathered, had in October last year invaded an uncompleted hotel in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State, where they allegedly recovered arms and ammunition.
Four workers and security men were arrested in connection with the recovery.
They were arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos and have been standing trial, while in prison custody.
Awoeye’s son, Ganiyu, was said to have been arrested over same matter and charged before an Ikeja magistrate’s court, presided over by Mrs M. O. Tanimola.
Owoeye, on his part, was jointly arraigned again before an Igbosere magistrate’s court, presided over by Mrs Awogboro and has been standing trial since last year.
His counsel wondered why the policemen, who claimed to have come from Abuja, would storm the court premises to arrest his client despite directive from the Police high command that all the cases should be consolidated for effective prosecution.

Owoeye, therefore, called on the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to come to his aid, adding that he had expressed his willingness to stand trial. He also urged the IG to investigate the motive behind the duplication of the same case at three different courts in Lagos State.

Drug Trafficker: ‘I Inserted 386 Grammes Of Cocaine In My Anus For N1m’
53-year-old shoe merchant known as Lekwauwa Mark Otaka, who was arrested at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, few hours to its closure, Wednesday, has disclosed that he inserted 386 grammes of cocaine into his anus over a promise of N1 million to traffic the drugs to Cambodia.
Arrested alongside the father of three was 57-year-old Odogwu Augustine Ike, an automobile dealer in Onitsha, Anambra State.
Ike was arrested with 2.150kg of heroin from Tanzania. The agency’s Commander at the Abuja Airport, Hamisu Lawan, explained that the duo tested positive for narcotic ingestion during routine screening.
According to him, “Odogwu Augustine Ike was caught with 110 wraps of heroin weighing 2.150kg from Tanzania on an Ethiopian Airline flight, while Otaka was found to have inserted seven wraps of cocaine weighing 386 grammes into his anus on an Egypt Airline flight to Cambodia. Both suspects are currently under investigation.”
‘I was afraid of swallowing’
During interrogation, Otaka, an Aba-based shoe merchant, said: “I was afraid of swallowing the drugs so I chose the insertion method. I inserted 386 grammes of cocaine into my anus in my desperation to get N1 million promised.”
On his part, Ike, said to have excreted 110 wraps of heroin, revealed that he was promised N600,000 to smuggle the drug. The father of four, who hails from Anambra State, blamed his action on financial hardship.
Commenting on the arrest, the Chairman/Chief Executive of the agency, Col. Muhammad Abdallah (rtd.) assured on strict narcotics screening at the alternative Kaduna Airport.
This, he said, would help in preventing illicit movement of narcotics by drug cartels, informing that the Agency had taken measures at ensuring comprehensive examination of passengers and goods at the Kaduna Airport.
Truck Owner Shot Dead For Challenging A Police Officer Who Urinated On A Truck
Just because he challenged a police officer, who reportedly urinated on a truck, Alhaji Dan Jos, a truck owner, was shot dead, yesterday, at Tin Can Island Port, bringing operations to a halt as his colleagues began a protest.
According to an eyewitness, Kabiru Alaba, the yet-to-be identified police officer, attached to the RORO Division, shot Dan Jos for challenging his colleague who urinated on a truck parked in the premises. He added that the offending policeman called a colleague from the RORO Division, who attacked Jos without finding out what happened.
According to Alaba, “the police officer was urinating on one of our trucks when Alhaji challenged him. It later led to an altercation and he called his colleague from the division, who came and shot Alhaji in his thigh.”
The incident led to demonstration by members of the Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, who took to the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in protest. Sensing that the protest might degenerate further, the said police officer reportedly shot sporadically into the air, making protesters scamper for safety.
Confirming the incident to Vanguard, the RTEAN Chairman, Tin Can Island chapter, Isiaka Olalere, said: “I have just been told that one of my members was shot dead by a police officer. I am going there to put everything under control.”
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Maritime Command, ASP Sadik Olatunde, said he was not aware of the crisis at the port, adding “I will get across to the DPO at the Command to put everything under control.”

Surprisingly, Pope Francis says the Catholic church may consider making married men priests
"We must think about whether viri probati are a possibility," Francis said referring to older, married men who are already involved in church business.
"Then we have to decide what tasks they can take on, for example in remote communities," he added in the interview with German weekly Die Zeit.
Many in the church believe, given the lack of priests in many places, that a new path to ordination should be opened.
They think that in addition to priests who take a vow of celibacy, older, married men with a long commitment to the church could also be considered.
Pope Francis said in May 2014 that "there are married priests in the Church" citing married Anglican ministers who joined the Catholic Church, Coptic Catholics and the priests of some Eastern churches.
The church, and notably the current pope's predecessor Benedict XVI, had previously said that celibacy was not a matter of inflexible church dogma unlike, for example, the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Zuma Times Hausa reports that a village, Tungan Magajiya in Rijau local government area of Niger state was on Wednesday allegedly invaded by some suspected ritualists who reportedly slaughtered four boys in an Islamic school and made away with their blood.
The ritualists who are said to be mainly out for fresh human blood stormed the Islamic school around 3am yesterday and attacked five boys during which they succeeded in killing three immediately while the fourth eventually died few hours later while the fifth is in the hospital recuperating.

The Minister who reacted to this claim through
his Special Adviser on Communications, Mr. Hakeem Bello, struck out the statement, describing it as misleading while pointing out projects they've approved for the Lagos State Government.
He said: “As far as International Airport Road which is currently the ground for alleged “frustration” is concerned, the correct position is that the Lagos State Government presented a request for FOUR roads that it would wish to take over.
“This is consistent with the position being canvassed by the Hon Minisiter for States who are interested to apply to take over Roads that are within their States.
“The Ministry has presented the Memorandum conveying the request of the Lagos State Government to the Federal Executive Council as was done with a similar request by the Kaduna State Government in 2016.
“Due to the fact that TWO of the roads also connect Ogun State, the Federal Executive Council could not reach an immediate decision on them because it requested the input of the other State Government affected.
“The Kaduna State Government requested the Federal Government to transfer two roads within Kaduna Metropolis to the State in November 2015. Due process was followed and the request of the State Government was approved in August 2016, a period of ten months.
“Federal Executive Council Memorandum are debated and commented upon by all members and in cases of roads, surveys, maps and other material have to be provided to assist members understand the location and connectivity of the roads, (in this case Four roads), in order to assist how they vote on the Memorandum.”

A lady who keeps gun for her boyfriend arrested in Cross River State
A 25-year-old Ms. Hope Usang, was arrested after being linked to arms leased out to robbers in Cross River State. The female armourer was arrested alongside 21 others by the Cross River State Police Command, after a robbery victim, Paschal Bisong of Ekpeyong Effiok street in Calabar Municipality, laid a complaint.
The Cross River State Police Commissioner, Hafiz Inuwa, who spoke to newsmen said
his men swung into action immediately, arresting Emmanuel Edet-Etim and Idoreyin Usa, who confessed they got their arms from Usang.
“In our efforts to build a safe Cross River, we must not tolerate any form of arms proliferation. On February 24, following a report by one Paschal Bisong of a robbery attack, my men swung into action, leading to the arrest of two suspects, Emmanuel Edet-Etim and Idoreyin Usa.
“The suspects confessed that one Hope Usang supplied them with arms for the robbery. When my men stormed Usang’s house, they recovered three revolvers, four rounds of ammunition, one pistol, one locally-made pistol among others" he said.
Usang, who spoke to a Vanguard correspondent, claimed the gun belonged to her boyfriend who is a student; “The guns belong to my boyfriend, a student. I never knew that he was keeping some guns in my house.” However when asked to name her boyfriend, she refused.
The State's Police Commissioner further disclosed that the arrested suspects will be charged to court for robbery, rape, kidnapping, murder, cultism, illegal possession of fire arms among others.
