Herdsmen/Farmers’ Clashes Has Nigeria Denied Foreign Loans – Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government on Thursday lamented the alleged misrepresentation of the clashes between herdsmen and farmers by the foreign media, saying it was forced to lobby them to manage the bad press.

“This government has been denied loans because of the misinformation that have been spread out there,” he said.

Mohammed, while explaining the activities of the ministry as part of his defence of the 2019 budget proposed by it, said the Federal Government had to send delegations to the United Kingdom and the United States to execute media campaigns.

The minister was asked to explain the engagement of the foreign media and PR lobby consultancy contracts awarded by the Federal Government.

He said, “The world has become a global village and what happens in Nigeria today reverberates all over the world. And we, in the administration, face a lot of challenges, especially from the comments of the foreign media, from the sometimes hostile positions of foreign governments, even foreign parliaments.

So, it is the duty of the Ministry of Information to regularly lobby and address international media in the countries.

“I remember that in 2018 we made two trips to the UK and two trips to the US, and these two trips helped tremendously in actually helping the people in the Diaspora and foreign governments to understand the real dynamics of the herdsmen/farmers clashes.

“Until we got there, the impression held by many of them was that the thing was Christians/Muslims, North/South and that time we had to book for interviews with CNN, BBC, Aljazeera, Reuters and AFP.

I think it is an important part of governance so that if you cannot mould their opinions, at least it can give them the opportunity of hearing our own side of the story.”

Mohammed called out some foreign media organisations for their alleged “erroneous” editorials on the security crisis.

“I am sure you have all noticed a lot of very erroneous editorials that have been carried by some highly respected pens like the New York Times, Boston Globe, which do not actually represent the true situation in Nigeria. So, we go there, not just for government but to give the correct impression about what goes on in this government,” he said.

Tribunal Dismisses Onnoghen’s No-Case Submission

The Code of Conduct Tribunal has dismissed a no-case application brought by the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

Mr Onnoghen had earlier on Friday dismissed charges of false asset declaration against him as “useless and invalid”, saying the Code of Conduct Bureau failed to follow its standard operations procedure in raising the charges.

He therefore argued that he had no case to answer, implying the charges be dismissed.

But a three-member panel of the tribunal led by Danladi Umar dismissed the application, saying the argument that the CCB, which is the prosecution, failed to abide by its guidelines amounted to a mere internal communication flaw.

Mr Umar said the standard operational procedure of the bureau was faulty and must not be complied with by the prosecution.

According to the tribunal, the procedure which is internal, cannot above the Nigerian constitution.

The tribunal adjourned immediately after the ruling till Monday.

Pope Enacts New Legislation To Prevent Child Abuse

Pope Francis on Friday enacted sweeping new legislation to protect children from sexual abuse within the Vatican and other Holy See institutions in Rome as well as by its diplomatic corps worldwide.

Previously, the abuse of minors and vulnerable people came under various legal provisions, some of them instituted on an ad hoc basis.

The new provisions mark the first time a unified and rigorous policy for the protection of children, which the Vatican has been demanding from local churches, has been compiled for the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church.

The changes were issued under the form of an Apostolic Letter, a 12-article law, and a set of detailed guidelines affecting personnel in the Vatican and its related institutions such as pontifical institutes and embassies.

While there are few minors who live inside the Vatican, such as children of security officials, there is a “pre-seminary” on Vatican grounds that houses altar servers, and many children visit Vatican institutions such as the museums every day.

The “pre-seminary,” from where some of the teenage boys who study there have gone on to become priests, was hit by a sexual abuse scandal in 2017. It involved one boy alleging that he had been abused by another minor. He said it was made possible by inadequate supervision on the part of adult priests.

The pre-seminary was mentioned specifically in one of the articles of the new legislation.

The over-arching law, which the Vatican first promised to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child in 2013, goes into effect on June 1.

Woman Who Told Husband She Was Going For A Wedding Found Dead In Lover's Bed

The Plateau Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old man, Gundumi Saya, over the death of his married lover, one Mrs. Hajara Markus, who died while spending the night with him.

According to the Police charge sheet currently before Justice Daniel Longji of Plateau State High Court, Jos, Saya, who has three wives and 14 children, is a resident of Zango-Dinya in Bassa Local Government of Plateau. Read more at:

The accused, who is being charged with culpable homicide, allegedly committed the offence on November 21, 2018.

The Police alleged that the suspect, on November 21, committed the act of adultery with the deceased when he lured her out of her matrimonial home to have s-xual intercourse with her, an offence that contravened section 368 of the Penal Code.

The charge sheet further said that the suspect intentionally dumped the body of the deceased by the road side, after he realised that she had died in his custody while he was having s-xual intercourse with her.

It said the accused refused to inform the Police of Hajara’s death, thereby contravening sections 189 and 102 of the Penal Code.

The suspect in a confessional statement, however, denied killing his lover, stating that he woke up to make love to her in the middle of the night only to find her dead.

“I have known Hajara before she got married; we have been in a relationship for a long time. In between, she got married and was divorced twice, but we still kept on seeing each other until she got married again a few years ago.

“Whenever I wanted to have s-x with her, I invite her to the bush where we will catch our fun, and she will return home.

“On the said date, we arranged to meet at my friend’s place, one Ojukwu, who is also married, after she told her husband that she was going for a wedding in Bauchi State.

“As agreed, we met at Ojukwu’s house and he (Ojukwu) gave us a room to pass the night.

“Ojukwu’s wife later sent a boy with garri and kuli-kuli (groundnut cake), to Hajara, which she soaked and took, after which she retired to sleep.

“I woke up at 2a.m. to make love to her, but discovered that she was motionless.

“I quickly ran to Ojukwu’s room to alert him, but his wife told me that he did not sleep at home.

“I called him on phone to tell him what happened; when he came, I suggested that we should report the matter to the Police, but he told me not to do that because I would land into serious trouble.

”The statement quoted the accused as claiming that Ojukwu advised him to dump the body by the road side, which they both did, and went their separate ways.

The statement said further: “Six days after we dumped Hajara’s body, I heard some commotion in front of my house and when I peeped, I saw policemen who came to arrest me.

“I ran to the bush and stayed there for three days after which my daughter called to tell me that my elder brother had been taken away by the Police.

“I felt bad when I heard that sad news and decided to surrender myself to the Police.’’

Saya, in Jos yesterday,  maintained that he had no hand in the death of the woman. His words: “I did not kill her.  But I may not know if my friend’s wife poisoned the garri she gave her because that was the last thing she took before going to bed.”

Husband to the deceased, Mr. Markus Jagaba, 44, in his statement, stated that his late wife took permission from him to attend a wedding at Jakandangiwa village in Bauchi State.

Jagaba said he allowed her to go because it was a family occasion and he did not suspect that she was going to meet another man.

Signs Sir Philip Green's Empire Is Beginning To Crumble As He Prepares To Shut Over 200 Stores

Sir Philip Green is preparing to shut as many as 200 stores over the next two years amid signs his Arcadia retail empire is beginning to crumble.

The Mail understands that leases on around 200 shops are coming up for review over the next two years which Green, 67, may not renew.

Arcadia employs 22,000 staff in 570 stores, with brands including Topshop, Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Evans, Miss Selfridge and Wallis, as well as hundreds of concessions.
The billionaire is planning to close its worst-performing outlets and slash rent costs.

On Thursday, it was revealed that a list of 67 of the more desirable stores is currently being offered to rival chains to take over the leases.

Included in the document, seen by the Financial Times, were branches of Topshop, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge.

Some of the at-risk stores were located in well-known shopping centres, such as the MetroCentre in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, as well as on provincial high streets.

The plans are the latest sign that Green's empire is struggling to fight back against an onslaught from online-only firms such as Asos and Boohoo, which have become hugely popular with younger shoppers.

If the stores close, Arcadia will join a raft of retailers which are shutting shops.
