The International Tennis
Federation (ITF) today confirmed that it has launched an investigation
into Romania’s Fed Cup captain, 70-year-old Ilie Nastase, after the
former U.S. and French Open singles champion made a derogatory comment
about Serena Williams’ unborn child, among other inappropriate
comments.
At a press conference on Friday,
Nastase speculated about the skin colour of Williams’ unborn child,
saying; “Let’s see what color it has. Chocolate with milk?”
In
a statement, the International Tennis Federation said: “The ITF does
not tolerate discriminatory and offensive language and behavior of any
kind. We are aware of alleged comments made by Romanian captain Ilie
Nastase and have begun an immediate investigation so that we have the
full facts of the situation before taking further and appropriate
action.”
Serena, who is presently engaged to Reddit co-founder, Alex Ohanian (a white man), has also now responded.
