Raudha Athif, a 21 year-old model and medical student from the Maldives who graced the cover of Vogue India’s Beauty in Diversity cover shoot,in October 2016, was found dead, hanging from a ceiling fan in her dorm room on Wednesday. Raudha, a second-year student of Islami Bank Medical College, was found dead in her room by her friends at the women’s dormitory of the college in Nawdapara area of Rajshahi city, Bangladesh on March 29.

Her horrified friends found her dangling from the fan with a scarf tied around her neck inside her room, one of them quickly cut the rope with hopes that she was still alive, Zillur Rahman, the officer in charge at the Shah Makhdum police station, told the Daily Star. Police authorities think the model and medical student must have committed suicide.

“We primarily suspect it is a suicide case. However, we can’t come to any conclusion until we get the autopsy report,” said Zillur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shah Makhdum Police Station

However, an unnatural death case of the model has been filed with Shah Makhdum Police Station and transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) on Saturday, April 1, according to officials.

RMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam ordered the transfer after Raudha’s parents and brother met him at his office on Friday and expressed their dissatisfaction over the investigation, said Rajshahi police.

“We have already started the investigation. Inspector Rashidul Islam of the DB has been assigned the task and he is working on it,” said Al Ameen Hossain, an assistant commissioner of the DB.

Rashidul Islam Saturday visited Islami Bank Medial College where the Maldivian girl studied and talked to some of the teachers and students.

“I am looking into the reasons that led Raudha to kill herself,” the inspector said.

He also insisted that police inquest found she killed herself by hanging and an autopsy conducted by a three-member medical board also found the same.

However, Raudha’s family members told the commissioner that they have rejected the autopsy findings because they believe she was murdered.

Her mother Aminath Muharrimath said that Raudha was pursuing her medical degree on a student scholarship given by the Department of Higher Education in the Maldives. She had to choose among three countries to be eligible for the scholarship — Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.  Raudha thought medical education in Bangladesh was better than that of the two other countries so went here, added the bereaved mother.

Raudha’s bereaved father, Mohamed Athif said while visiting Islami Bank Medial College campus Saturday said:

“She was a topper in academic results. Since her childhood she used to get above 90 percent marks in all subjects.”

He added that his daughter dreamt of visiting her aunt in Australia after her exams in May of this year. He said:

“She was brilliant and had many dreams. Why would she commit suicide?” her father said.

Mahmuda Begum, superintendent at the female-only hostel said that Athif “always looked happy” and that it was “hard to believe she would commit suicide”.

Her Instagram page, shows happy photos.

Raudha who had described modelling as a hobby rather than something she wanted to pursue as a career once said:

“Modelling is a hobby rather than a career for me, since I’m studying to become a doctor,” she told Vogue India when they photographed her last year, picking six models from six nations of the Indian subcontinent to grace their cover.

“I’ve never been so bold as to take part in any big pageant before this.”
