Police Ask Vigilance Groups, Others To Surrender Arms

The Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr  Garba Umar, has asked those in possession of illegal firearms in the state to surrender them to the police within 21 days or be arrested.

Umar who stated this in a press conference in his office in Amawbia, Anambra State, said the order was sequel to a recent directive by the Inspector-General of Police,  Ibrahim Idris, that illegal  firearms and ammunition  be mopped up within 21 days.

The CP said the command had set up a nine-man task force chaired by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Baba Maiyaki,  to enforce compliance.

He said the mop up operation was targeted at full enforcement of the Firearms Act of 2004.


He listed the prohibited firearms  to include artillery, apparatus for the discharge of any explosives of gas diffusion projectiles, rocket weapons, bomb and grenades.

Others were machine guns and pistols, military rifles, revolvers and pistols, pump action gun of all categories as well as any other firearms, weapons fabricated to kill.

He  urged members of the public, individuals and groups such as vigilantes, neighbourhood watch, town unions, hunters, watch night men or any group or association under any capacity to surrender such prohibited arms before the expiration of the date of the ultimatum.

He  asked for the support of the people of the state in the enforcement of the directives.
