The deceased reprotedly died at Kidney Care Centre, Medical Village, Ondo town, Ondo State. The laboratory attendant was reportedly infected with the disease in Port Harcourt, where she went to visit a relative, who had earlier been infected and died from the disease.
Consequently, workers in the hospital, yesterday, raised the alarm “over the alleged insensitivity of the management of the hospital to take action to protect the staffers.”
They alleged that the hospital management was aware of the suspected case of Lassa fever in the hospital and that the case was reported to Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Akinwumi Akinbodewa, but refused to give a directive for medical examination for the workers, particularly the health and medical officers.
One of the health officers, who spoke in confidence, said workers at “the kidney care centre were currently working in fear. We don’t know what to do, one of us has been killed by Lassa Fever.
“We have appealed to the management to conduct at medical test for us but the CMD did not want us to cry out because of the image of the hospital and the state but our own life is at risk now.
“We expected the hospital to have taken our blood sample to Irrua Specialists Hospital to check whether any of us had been infected or not but they have done nothing about it.” The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro denied any case of Lassa fever in the state.
Adegnenro, who confirmed the death of the medical worker in the hospital, said the deceased died of complication of liver problem and not Lassa fever.
