Donisha Prendergast says she and her pals were surrounded by police as they left their Airbnb, and she believes a neighbour called the police solely because they're black.
The filmmaker, 33, whose mum Sharon Marley was adopted by the reggae legend, posted videos on Instagram after she and her friends were surrounded by officers from the Rialto Police Department.
She says that her group - including friends Kelly Fyffe-Marshall and Komi-Oluwa Olafimihan - were mistaken for burglars by a neighbour as they loaded their belongings into a car outside the home they'd been staying in.
The women described the area as a "white neighbourhood" and say they believe the neighbour called the police because they're black.
Donisha is now planning to sue the police department for detaining them for 45 minutes, according to the New York Daily Times .
Posting about it on Instagram, she wrote: "My hand was made strong, by the hands of the Almighty. None of them can stop the time. We won’t stand aside and look. We are greater than they wanted us to believe."
In the video, Donisha is on the phone to her Airbnb landlord as she attempts to tell police officers why she's there.
The woman on the phone says a police officer has just called her, and Donisha says they don't believe she's actually the landlord and that she's a friend they're using to back up their story.
Donisha says there are four police officers on scene and that a neighbour had called the police after seeing them packing their car outside the house.
She posted a second video, adding: "Be Love. So much things to say right now.... Got surrounded by the police for being black in a white neighbourhood. Smh. I’m sad and irritated to see that fear is still the first place police officers go in their pursuit to serve and protect, to the point that protocol supersedes their ability to have discernment.
"Many have suffered and died in moments like these. That’s a crazy reality check. Give Thanks for life, and the ability to stand our ground.
"We are stronger together. Use your voice collectively.
"We have a right to be right."
