Kaduna slave house: Police arraign six teachers

A Kaduna State Magistrate’s Court on Monday remanded six teachers of an Islamic Centre where about 300 persons, including children, were rescued at Rigasa in the Igabi Local Government Area of the state.

The police had raided the centre on September 27 and unchained the 300 detainees.

Some of those rescued, according to the police, were from Burkina Faso, Mali and other African countries. Some of the male detainees were said to have been s-xually abused.

On Monday, six teachers at the centre, Ismail Abubakar, Umar Abubakar, Abdul’azeez Adam, Abubakar Muktar, Abdullahi Auwal and Salisu Ibrahim, were arraigned.

The police prosecutor, Hassan Malan, who read out the First Information Report to the court, said the six defendants were accused of “criminal conspiracy, wrongful confinement, cruelty to persons and unnatural act.”

He said investigation was still ongoing.

The defence counsel, Sani Surajo, argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to take the plea of his clients, noting that they were only in court for cognisance.

Surajo’s attempt to convince the court to allow the defendants to remain in the custody of the police since investigation was ongoing, was rejected by the police prosecutor, saying that police facility was overstretched.

The counsel told journalists after the court sitting that they would approach the high court with the certified FIR presented by police at the court for bail application.
