Matthew Proffitt was spending a day on the links with friends at the Hilton Head Lakes golf course in Hardeeville when they stumbled upon the massive unexpected guests Wednesday.
“They would lay still for a few minutes, with their jaws locked on each other, and then try to roll or shake,” Proffitt said. “The fight went on for about two hours.”
Proffitt pulled out his phone and recorded the encounter, showing the gators repeatedly grunting loudly as they took over part of the course, video shows.
Alligators aren’t uncommon near the course, but it’s the first time Proffitt spotted one of the beasts so close, he said.
“We were pretty sure they wouldn’t mess with us, because they were locked in on each other,” Proffitt told the Hilton Head Island Packet. “But it was pretty nerve-wracking seeing that.”
Proffitt, a staff member at the golf club, said his group moved on after capturing the footage, leaving the alligators to sort out their apparent dispute.
The footage was posted to the golf course’s Facebook page the following day.
“Sudden death playoff on the 18 yesterday,” the post read. “Keep your eyes open out there, the course is full of wildlife!”
