Veteran dancer, Tessy Yembra is dead.. dies of strange illness

Veteran dancer, Tessy Yembra popularly known as African Tina Tuner has died.

She died on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, after battling a strange illness reportedly for years.

She gave up the ghost at her Lagos home.

She became famous for her dance prowess in 80s and early 90's featuring in almost all the top records.

She danced in late Sikiru Ayinde Barrister’s Fuji Garbage àlbum in 1985 and Sir Shina Peters’ Ijo Shina to mention a few.

So good was she that she even danced for the fuji artistes of this generation.

She was in her 50's.

She has since been buried as her family plans her 8th day prayers and also prepares for her 41 days in Lagos.

Dele Momodu also paid tribute to her by sharing a video of her doing what she did best in her life time.

NCDC cries out as rapid test kits black market rises

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Thursday raised the alarm over increasing deaths caused by rejection of patients in the country’s hospitals.

The PTF Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha,   at the task force press conference in Abuja, lamented that despite the admonition of the Federal Ministry of Health,  hospitals were still rejecting non-COVID-19 patients.

Also at the press conference, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control Director General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, raised the alarm over growing rapid test kits black market in the country.


According to him, some organisations are selling “what they call antibody tests.” He, therefore warned that such “antibody tests” could not give valid COVID-19 results.

Nigeria currently has  8,733 COVID-19 patients and  112 isolation centres in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory. There are 29 laboratories, where COVID-19 is being tested.

Man stabs brother to death over soft drink in Lagos

One Chisom Eze has allegedly killed his 19-year-old brother, Henry, during a fight over a bottle of soft drink at their place of residence on Johnson Street, Alaba area of Lagos State.

Punch Metro gathered that 21-year-old Chisom left the drink in the house and stepped out to attend to an issue, but when he returned, he discovered that Henry had taken advantage of his absence to consume the drink.

  Angered by his brother’s action, Chisom was said to have grabbed a knife and stabbed Henry in the neck.

However, their sister, who allegedly witnessed the incident, raised the alarm and neighbours apprehended Chisom.


Efforts to rescue Henry were said to have proved abortive as he died of the injuries he sustained during the attack.

Footage of the incident, which was posted online showed the victim’s remains being taken out by wailing neighbours and sympathisers.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said, “Chisom stabbed his younger brother, Henry, to death because of a bottle of soft drink. He is currently in our custody. Investigation is ongoing.”

George Floyd's fiancée and family appeal for calm

George Floyd's fiancée and family have appealed for calm and said he wouldn't want people to get hurt after a night of violence saw a man shot dead and clashes with police.

Courteney Ross spoke out after carnage unfolded in the streets of the US city of Minneapolis amid growing anger on the second night of protests after Mr Floyd's death in police custody.

A pawn shop owner shot a man dead as shops were looted, several buildings were torched and police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse gatherings.

In a tearful new interview, Philonise Floyd said the officers "executed" his 46-year-old brother and should be charged with murder and "get the death penalty".

Ms Ross said she was "heartbroken" by Wednesday night's unrest.

She told the Star Tribune: "Floyd would not want people to get hurt.

"He lived his life protecting people. That is the truth."

Mr Floyd's family has called for the four officers involved in his death to be charged with murder. All four have been sacked by the police force.

No one has been charged.

The death is being investigated by the FBI and the probe is being overseen by the US Department of Justice.

Mr Floyd's brother, Philonise, sobbed as he told CNN on Thursday: “These officers, they need to be arrested right now. They need to be arrested and held accountable about everything, because these people want justice right now.

"Justice is these guys need to be arrested, convicted of murder, and given the death penalty."

"As I watched the video, those four officers, they executed my brother."

Philonise Floyd added that he wants protests to be peaceful, “but people are torn and hurt because they’re tired of seeing black men die constantly over and over again".

Mr Floyd died after he was pinned down in the street by Minneapolis Police Department on Monday night.

Kidnappers of CAN Chairman speak, demand N20m ransom

Kidnappers of Nasarawa State chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Joseph Masin, have demanded N20 million to set him free.

The cleric was abducted on Wednesday night at his Lafia home by assailants who came on motorcycles.

Thursday, the state CAN vice chair Pastor Tayo Samuel told reporters that the abductors had contacted Masin’s associates, asking for N20 ransom.

Also Thursday, Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu inaugurated a community policing committee in the state to check the uptick in criminal activities in the state’s remote parts.


On the committee are representatives of traditional institution, civil society organisations, and labour unions, among others.

Adamu, represented by the state commissioner of police Bola Longe, said there was need to scale up the security architecture in the state in the face of rising crimes.

Longe said police were on the trail of Masin’s abductors.

Nigeria may reopen Lagos, Abuja, Kano airports in few days

Major airports in the country will in the “next few days” roar into life after weeks of inactivity caused by the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.

The airports are the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja; Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja; Aminu Kano Arport, Kano and the Port Harcourt Airport, Choba, Rivers State.

The  Federal Government on March 16 placed a travel ban on 13 countries, including China, United States  and Italy  that had recorded over 1,000 cases of Coronavirus.

On March 13 it shut all  airports for one month and later extended it by two weeks. On May 6, the government further extended the airports’ closure by four weeks until June 7.


The decision to commence flights at the airports, according to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), is to avoid chocking the “system.”

NCAA Director-General, Captain Musa Nuhu stated this at a virtual event organised by the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ART) titled COVID-19: The Challenges and Opportunity for Nigeria’s Aviation Value Chain, During and Post.

Nuhu said the NCAA worked with representatives of  airlines and ground handling companies before forwarding a proposal to the Minister of Aviation for approval.

The NCAA boss said: “We may resume domestic operations with four or five airports and we hope to expand as we get better. We don’t want to rush everything at the same time and get it choked up….

“Every money is important and we cannot achieve the two-meter physical distance. We are hopeful in the next few days we can resolve those issues and allow the airlines to commence operations.

“We have made our suggestion and recommendations and we are awaiting feedback from the Ministry of Aviation.”

Shanghai to extend Ighalo’s United loan deal

Odion Ighalo looks set to remain at Old Trafford for the rest of the season as his Chinese club, Shanghai Shenhua, reconsider their initial stance to recall him.

The former Watford striker joined on transfer day deadline in January, and had gone on to score four goals in eight appearances for the English giants before the EPL campaign was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The striker is due to return to China at the end of May, but the possible reappearance of the 2019/20 Premier League season has led to talks of the agreement being extended.

Talks initially broke down between both clubs, but it seems communication has been restored and the CSL side now look ready to grant the striker an extension.

According to Sky Sports News, Shanghai are now open to allowing Ighalo remain with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side until next January, although they will expect him to sign a new deal with the Chinese outfit.

Ighalo’s existing contract with the Chinese club is due to expire in December 2022, although it is thought that he has been offered a new and improved deal until December 2024.

23-year-old man arrested while carrying 45-year-old uncle’s head in sack

A 23-year-old man from Mwandolo Village in Bura Ward, Mwatate Constituency in Taita Taveta County,Kenya has been arrested on suspicion of killing his uncle on Wednesday night.

Ali Mwinyi Rajab is alleged to have chopped of the head of his uncle, Festus Machila, 45, following a dispute between them.

Mwatate OCPD Monica Kimani said Rajab was confronted early Thursday when he was seen carrying a sack that had blood dripping from it.

When locals overpowered him and opened the sack, they discovered he was carrying the head of his uncle, a resident of Mochi Village, which is located 5 kilometers from Mwandolo Village, where the suspect lives.


Machila’s body was found in his house on Thursday morning.

Neighbours say the last time they saw the deceased in public was on Wednesday (May 27) 4pm.

It remains unclear what led to the rage that resulted in Machila’s death.

The deceased was taken to Moi County Referral Hospital morgue in Voi.

Rajab is being held in custody at Mwatate Police Station as investigations into the matter continue.

Parents oppose plan to reopen Lagos schools

Some parents in Lagos State have kicked against the reopening of schools in view of the continued spread of the coronavirus in the country.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the parents said it was important for the Federal and state governments to continue to safeguard children from the pandemic.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Federal Government had said it was considering adopting morning and afternoon shifts of classes for reopening of schools.

One of the parents, Mrs Ayobami Ojo, urged the government to allow children to remain at home until containment of the pandemic.

“There is no need for morning and evening classes. Let the children continue to stay safe at home as the virus is increasing every day.

“Children will naturally not be as cautious as adults and schools cannot be compared to markets. Reopening of schools should be considered when confirmed cases drop very well,” Ojo said.

Also, a businesswoman, Mrs Abiodun Aina, who lives at Ayobo, said that children’s lives could be jeopardised when schools resume.

“It is difficult to control adults, let alone children, we should not risk the lives of children. A two-shift option for classes may not stop the spread of the virus. It is better for them to remain at home until COVID -19 subsides or a vaccine is found,” she said.

“Nigerians should stop putting pressure on government to reopen schools. Why are we in a rush? We need to be patient,” Aina said.

Power distributors sue FG over business interference

Electricity distribution companies have dragged the Federal Government to court to restrain it from further interfering in the corporate business activities of the power firms.

According to the firms, the government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and other agencies, had been interfering in the corporate activities of the Discos, a development, they claimed, had hampered their smooth operations.

Senior officials of some of the power firms told our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday that the Discos resolved to take the matter to the court.

Nigeria’s power distribution firms include Abuja, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ibadan, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano and Port Harcourt Discos.

“We cannot continue to fold our arms and watch how the government through its agencies sustain their undue interference in our corporate business activities,” an impeccable source with one of the Discos stated.

The official added, “The NERC, TCN (Transmission Company of Nigeria) and even NEC (National Economic Council) are often interfering in Discos’ activities, and we need to ask the court to call them to order.”

It was gathered that the Discos were asking the court to restrain the affected agencies from interfering in their businesses unless the boards of the power firms were duly consulted.

Officials of the Discos told our correspondent that the court order had been served on the affected agencies, adding that the power firms were also asking the court to NERC from sending forensic auditors to their firms.

Nigerian Singer, May D, took to social media to give reasons he decided to cancel a scheduled interview by Ubi Franklin on his Instalive talk show.

Ubi had earlier taken to his Twitter page to disclose that his scheduled interview with May D, has been cancelled.

The music executive wrote ;

“The Interview with @MisterMayD Has been cancelled. From a WhatsApp message sent to me a few minutes ago, he said his management Declined the interview after we both agreed. So we won’t be having the May D interview.”


However, May D, in his response to Ubi’s now-deleted post, lambasted the music executive.

May D said he cancelled the interview because he knows Ubi is on Jude Okoye’s side.

COVID-19: Lagos govt reviews BRT occupancy to 42 passengers

The Lagos State Government has given approval to Primero Transport Services Limited, operator of the high capacity Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, to carry 42 passengers seated with no standing as against earlier directive aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

The approval followed a review of its earlier order which limited commuter occupancy to 21 passengers but still ensures that occupancy is not more than 60 per cent of bus passenger capacity. The review takes effect from Friday, May 29, 2020.

Managing Director of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, regulator of BRT, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo on Thursday, said government also approved two fare zones for BRT services. Bus services between Ikorodu and Fadeyi will attract a fare of N300 and trips beyond Fadeyi will attract N500.

She explained that the decision to establish the fare zones was taken following extensive consultation with stakeholders, majority of whom are those who use regulated bus services daily.

She stated that operators must ensure that passengers wear face mask at all times, sanitise their hands with alcohol-based sanitizer or wash with soap under running water before and after each trip.

Besides, Akinajo said passengers’ temperature must be measured before being allowed entry into the buses.

Operators would be expected to disinfect their vehicles, and depots regularly and continuously.

She said operators must ensure bus terminals and bus stops are not overcrowded with passengers and commercial activities, at any point in time, in line with the social distancing protocol for passengers queuing to board buses.

Operators and their staff are mandated to always wear personal protective equipment while in transit and dispose non-reusable ones appropriately.

According to Akinajo, passengers should report any erring operator that failed to comply with the guidelines to the monitoring officer at sight or call LAMATA on 09099-LAMATA (09099-526282) or write stating the vehicle registration number, its unique code, time of incident and location.

She, however, urged residents to also call 08000CORONA to report any suspected case of COVID-19.

Recall that Primero transport services has suspended further operation of BRT from the road on the pretext of running at a loss with 60 per cent seated occupancy directive by the government in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
