The body of the deceased popularly known as “Ezeugo” was said to have been found dangling from a tree with a rope tied to his neck.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, after noticing the strange scene, passersby alerted the police to the development.
The late Igwe was said to have hailed from Amaechi Idodo in Enugu State and operated a restaurant with his wife at Ishieke community located in the outskirts of Abakaliki, the state capital city.
Confirming the incident, daughter to the deceased, Uzoamaka, said that her father left their residence as usual that fateful day to his restaurant but later called and instructed their mother on the telephone to take care of them.
According to the young lady, the deceased did not respond to their mother’s questions until he was found dead on the tree.
A close friend to the family, Mr. Chime Unah, expressed sadness over the sudden death of Igwe, describing the incident as deeply shocking.
He said, “I don’t know why he decided to take his own life. The man was a landlord and owned the restaurant he was operating. He was a good man; I really cannot say why he hanged himself on a tree.”
Efforts to get the reaction of the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Lovet Odah, were unsuccessful as she was said to be away on official assignment by an aide.
