Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, the 43-year-old candidly opened up about her struggle.
However, she was surprised to be shown a touching clip from her daughter Phoenix, 20, in which she spoke about supporting her mother through it all.
Phoenix said: "It was pretty hard watching my mum got through that and being in that situation with everything that went down in my family. You know we grow up pretty fast."
She heartbreakingly added: "Every kid going through a traumatic experience would blame themselves because they feel somewhat responsible, because that’s your mum, that’s your family and you only get one.
"So when you’re trying to do everything in your power to help them, and you can’t, and you’re helpless you’re like, 'damn, this is partly my fault'.
"But it’s never the kid’s fault. It wasn’t easy but I had my family and I have stayed pretty strong. Having my mum as Scary Spice, Mel B, you can’t be a wimp."
Mel's appearance comes as Lorraine is launching a Shine A Light campaign, to mark Mental Health Awareness Week.
Gushing over her mother's strength in a VT that left Mel close to tears, Phoenix added: "My mum is such an independent woman, it shocks me.
"She can just be amazing on TV but be so nervous and you wouldn’t even think she was nervous.
"She is just a natural. She is a good mum and a good friend. I love you and you are doing great."
