The Baby singer, 25, feared that he wouldn’t be able to stay faithful to his then on-off model girlfriend, 23, and was worried about honouring his vows.
The Canadian heartthrob opened up about his marriage in a candid interview on the Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday 28.
"I was extremely nervous,” he told host Ellen.
“I felt like in the past, we had talked about you know, me asking the question, and I felt like she would say 'yes’.
"I wasn't really nervous about the saying yes, but I think I was more nervous about, 'Am I gonna make this commitment?
“Am I able to make this commitment as a man and be able to honour what I say? because that's a serious commitment, when you say you're gonna love someone for better or for worse and be faithful... That's huge.
“Am I able to do that? And so, I think that was really what I was battling with."
Since getting hitched, the young couple have appeared head-over-heels in love and just this week shared a romantic moment on the red carpet premiere of his YouTube documentary series Seasons.
However, in the docu-series Hailey also opened up about having cold feet and asking for her parents’ advice when faced with his marriage proposal.
"I remember calling my parents when we decided to get married and I said, 'This is the time I need you to stop me from doing something crazy if you think this is a bad idea," she admits to the camera.
“Cause in my heart I knew that it’s what I wanted to do but I was like, just tell me right now if you think, well, woah, just relax and take a breath and think about this and see how you feel in like 24 hours or a week or something.
“And they were like, ‘Honestly, we think that this is meant to be for you and we know that this is what you want, so we trust you.’ And I was like, alright.”
Hailey also admitted in the documentary that she loved watching Justin work on his music, the product of which is a new album called Changes which will be officially released on Valentine's Day, February 14.
