– The Nigerian military admits challenges, but says it is winning the war against the Boko Haram sect
– Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state supports the statement, says it is wrong for anyone to declare that Boko Haram are in control
– President Buhari deserves commendation, Shettima opines
Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu, the general officer commanding (GOC) of the 7th division of the Nigerian army, hosted a press briefing in the capital of Borno state, Maiduguri, PremiumTimes reports. The army chief expressed confidence in the upcoming total defeat of the Boko Haram insurgency, but admitted that peace would be hard to achieve without support by the Nigerians.
“We are winning the war. We are bringing the war to conclusion, very soon.
“We want everybody to help us to support the peace that is emerging.
“The peace is more enduring and more gratifying for us in Borno and other parts of the north-east of Nigeria,” the GOC said.
He also expressed gratitude to traditional rulers, civic groups and non-governmental organisations for that had been their “accurate information, their support and advice” to the armed forces.
“The military has recorded tremendous achievements in the past six months, we are now consolidating the emerging peace in the state,” Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state told journalists in Maiduguri earlier this week.

“It is wrong for anyone to say that the Boko Haram are in control. Yes you might have pockets of them trying to foment mischief, but eventually, we shall overcome the hiccups.
“The military deserve commendation not condemnation,” the governor said.
According to him, it was difficult to end terrorism within a short time, and President Buhari deserves special commendation too.
“The people of the north-east, especially those of Borno are eternally grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment toward restoring sanity in the area. The most important thing for us now, as a people, is to support the federal Government on the anti-terrorism war,” Governor Shettima said.

The declaration Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu goes in line with the words of Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the army’s spokesperson, who described the recent individual and joint operations by the Nigerian and the Cameroonian troops as a tremendous success in the war against Boko Haram.
Earlier, the governors of Borno and Yobe, the two troubled north-eastern states, said Boko Haram did not occupy any local government areas.
