The government of Kano State in northwest Nigeria has distributed 5,000 irrigation water pumps to farmers as part of efforts to boost dry season agriculture.
The pumps were distributed during the official commencement of the drilling of over 1,000 boreholes for dry season farming of wheat and rice across the 44 Local Government Areas of the state.
At the distribution ceremony in the state capital, Governor Ganduje also deployed 400 agriculture extension workers who were employed to train local farmers in the state.
The Governor explained that wheat and rice farming in Kano has become an all year round business as he dramatically tagged Kano farms “the green areas”.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Audu Ogbeh, said that the state government’s move would increase food sufficiency in the nation and beyond.
