The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife has been shut down indefinitely over continuous protests by some of its workers.
According to the Registrar of the university, Dotun Awoyemo, the management decided to shut down the institution for the safety of all the students and staff.
He said: “We have shut down the university indefinitely pending the time that we will resolve issues with our workers, the Non-academic Staff of University (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (SSANU).
“We have asked our newly admitted students to go home and postponed the resumption of old students indefinitely.”
It will be recalled that the workers of OAU under the aegis of NASU and SSANU have intensified their protest against non-payment of allowances and the alleged imposition of a Vice-Chancellor despite the ‘no work’, ‘no pay’ threat by the university’s authorities.
And the Academic Staff Union of the institution also disagreed with the Senior Staff Association of Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) over the appointment of Prof. Ayobami Salami, who is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) as the 11th VC of the university.
